https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olivier_Fourdan
>Olivier Fourdan is the creator of the Xfce desktop environment, for which development began at the end of 1996.[1][2]
>He started his career as a new technologies production engineer as well as in web development and embedded Linux systems.[3]
>Fourdan has been working for Red Hat since 2007, interrupted by 2 years at Intel during 2013 and 2014. As of 2017, he is active in the adoption of Wayland, working on many different components, amongst them GTK, Mutter, GNOME Control Center, XWayland, and Mesa3D.[4][5][6]

It looks like they are working on it regardless, see

      .
Question, is when will it finally be released?

Yay! now we can have another compositor competing to decrease portability under "wayland" world.

Aren't they all striving to adhere to the Wayland protocols? They may have different implementations, but have the same general end result, correct?

That's not how it works, homosexual.
The implementation is most important. Protocols are just vague "we want this and that" wishes from Gayland devs but how it was achieved ultimately will depends on devs of any particular tool.
...Which is absolutely fricking abhorrent and moronic because sure as frick everyone will be implementing these wishes of Gayland devs bit differently and there's no actual unified framework for even most basic of things, something that X11 just fricking has and does not need any fricking around and praying that your software will work under particular environment.
Wayland is broken and non functional by default and its devs instead of doing actual work just went with "figure it out yourself, homosexuals".
