this picture is from the dave2d review right? that guy basically runs an advertisement channel why do you even watch that moron?

the advertisement channel said there's basically no difference and the new one is not worth it

He said he'd be replacing his 2018 ipad pro with the new one at the very beginning of the video. That thing is engraved into your subconscious
even if you don't realize it. People will gobble it up the new shiny thing(tm) in droves in no time.

his justification was terrible: to replace a mac studio he hadn't returned back to apple, to use a first release app that he wasn't able to try with his demo ipads

that was some bird-brained normie shit. "with this $2K iPad pro...and 4 $1K iPhones...I could get rid of this stupidly expensive Mac studio" moronic. Actually moronic. it won't be nearly as seamless or reliable as a working and physically connected setup THAT YOU AlREADY HAVE.

The top right one clearly isn't the nano texture glass.
The top left one could be.

I genuinely don't understand why I should be bothered to replace my ipad pro from a couple years ago.
It's thinner? Is that all? Besides some theoretical AI crap that nobody cares about.

only the display. the reviewer found no real performance difference from their 2018 ipad pro.

From where is this? What is the brightness setting choosen for each?

So far the only semi-informative review I saw was from some black women saying it does 16h in TikTok. Ars reviews is "man, I kinda want a M4 mac" and rest is even more useless. Where are notebookcheck bros when you need them.

If you don't need the extra performance, you probably shouldn't. Though screen/weight/keyboard/pen do seem like massive improvements if you can handle the extra shekels for it.

i'm an artist and i hate it when tablets try to do more so... uh, no. i don't care about the new pencil.
there's a reason why everyone on /i/ yells at people to use use a fricking regular round hard brush in art programs; the rest aren't really that useful except for niche situations. it isn't going to be life changing.

OLED uses PWM to control pixel brightness. As fas as I know, all OLEDs do this. This is unacceptable.

One possible solution I can see is an LCD panel overlaid over an OLED panel. The resolutions of both would need to be the same, the panel sizes would need to be the same, and every pixel between both would need to be in perfect alignment.
And no, this is not what local dimming or mini-LED is.

Another potential mitigation would be to implement some sort of persistence for each pixel. this could be done with something like a phosphor coating.

How would this work with OLED's BBC advantage unless the LCD went off completely for true blacks. Also it'd be stupidly fat.

      >OLED uses PWM to control pixel brightness.
IPS uses PWM to control the backlight brightness.

IPS often does use PWM but there are options that don't use it.

Most IPS screens these days are directly driven or use extremely high frequency PWM (24KHz-16MHz) to manage brightness.
Meanwhile OLEDs are at a woefully low 240Hz.

An mp3 player that also has the option to do more tasking stuff than most laptops, sure. Besides, if the i7 was more efficient, it'd still make sense even for a plain mp3 player.

As long it makes it last longer, why the frick not?

i'm an artist and i hate it when tablets try to do more so... uh, no. i don't care about the new pencil.
there's a reason why everyone on /i/ yells at people to use use a fricking regular round hard brush in art programs; the rest aren't really that useful except for niche situations. it isn't going to be life changing.
pigment on canvas; that's all one needs.

The big thing about the pencil isn't the barrel roll gimmick but the haptic feedback and the ability to adjust stuff without having to move your hand to UI elements.

I doubt there are life changing changes coming anytime soon but small improvements do add up, specially when coming from iPads without hover.

            Anonymous

nobody cares about haptic feedback in pens.
wacom experimented with this years ago with various pen features and all of them got turned off due to getting in the way/being distracting so they just gave up.
even pen tilt is barely used.

Lots of manufacturers fricked up something as simple as trackpad too – I haven't tried to pen yet but from the sound of it, it's quite the upgrade that you'll probably won't even notice that much until it's missing. Just a shame it's still so comically large and doesn't have a softer tip.

microLED is starting to go down in cost, so companies are getting an early start on memory holing their OLED usage of that absolute memetech. No one wants to get caught being called morons. All OLED makers and users will be squarely in that camp by 2027
