How can we accelerate downfall of reddit and discord? Make it so unbearable for normies so they seek another platforms? And how can we ensure and establish FOSS federated ones? The other question - should we care? And if we care, how we bring quality people? The answer to last question is simple - shit eating normies will continue dwelling in sinking ship, while more tech gooned up folks might wanna seek solution. We need to ensure visibility and ease of access to those ones. One not good thing about federates mediums is that some of federations ran by pederasts, power hungry reddit mods, yeah, you could host your federation but that brings question about money. So, IQfy whats your thoughts on such topic?

    >reddit
Forums are just as good and still work fine. You can also do the federated version but like you said, those problems are just as bad as reddit.
    >Discord
Nothing will ever be as good as discord if it's going to be a FOSS. You'd have to settle for something smaller but focus on improving usability. That's probably the only thing discord has that's worth copying that doesn't cost millions to develop and maintain.

Typically, if you make a well thought out post, you will get a well written response. You will also get more responses if you help others and you're known on the board for it. It's much better than getting "lol" or "based" in 5 minutes after you say something.

    Easy to fix Discord

Fork the Cinny matrix client, it looks just like Discord

Take Mumble and embed it into your client and into a server in some ad-hoc fashion in such a way that you can provide teamspeak/discord style voice channel functionality

Solve the "users don't understand federation" problem by presenting users with a list of Matrix providers. Each provider will have associated with it its registration and usage cost ($$$), policies, federation/blockage data, description of who manages it and who typically uses it, support or no support, and other data. Users can use some dropdown menus that let them filter down to providers with qualities that they want, which are displayed in randomized order instead of alphabetical to make sure users are choosing them uniformly.

As for Reddit, someone else in this thread pointed out that webforums are still great.

There is a culture of progression, archiving, and information-sharing that is much easier to cultivate in the forum style than on reddit-style or chan-style boards. Forums are actually at their best when there are only dozens or hundreds of hyper-active regulars, or in any other circumstance where an actual community of real social circles and human bonds forms in some way related to the forum as a gathering point.
On forums, when new information is found, people tend to just use that new information to refine old info, building a common 'idea infrastructure'. When a user asks a question that has already been answered, you can just refer them to the existing posts that the community has built together. People will actually read old posts and have ongoing discussions that build real knowledge, instead of just asking the same questions over and over day after day, month after month, year after year.

Reddit is an inherently bad format for communites and for knowledge, it's really only useful as an aggregator, and only if it's very well-curated, which it usually is not.

You want to replicate reddit, but you did not ask yourself "what's so good about it" in the first place. What's so good about Reddit, that you feel the need to replicate it? We say with twitter-clones, even open source ones, that the Twitter format is inherently worthless.

get the most upvotes in a thread on a default subreddit by saying some gay reddit shit and then edit the post to say something extremely racist immediately after you reach the top. if people were organized about it they'd lose advertisers over the course of a month and have to drastically change the edit system.

I went to school with, interned with, and worked with a cohort of people that read/posted on cscq all the time, e.g. when that infamous “I stepped on and killed the CEO’s dog in an interview” one came out I had three separate people bring it up in conversation the same day.
The good news is that for 80% of them it’s social pressure and they stop caring what others think enough to either start caring about programming, go into project management, or leave the field within a few years of graduating.
The people that persist in that petty psychopath way of life move on to blind, and all their coworkers are aware of their essence as “grubbing dispassioned POS”. While they probably get the TC they’re going for, you mostly won’t have to interact with them as they’re socially ostracized and professionally avoid any hard (read: interesting and fun) projects.
TL;DR People grow out of it and you won’t see CSCQ types past ~27

Hear me out, Reddit can occasionally be helpful, those few rare moments of helpfulness justify it's continued existence. Also the porn on Reddit is top tier, that alone should justify it's continued existence.

Discord is a hellhole filled with furries, transgender freaks, pedos, and fricking lossers. That site deserves to die. It is worse than Reddit.

I use both for business. Reddit is better and more profitable in every way, mostly because redditors refuse to accept that astroturf exists and take every recommendation even from obvious sockpuppet accounts as gospel truth.
Discord is useless but the ease and immediacy are a siren song.

What communities like lemmy really need is more active users so best way to accelerate downfall of sites like reddit or twitter is to be active on platforms like mastodon or lemmy. While these platforms already have fair bit of users they seem somewhat lacking when it comes to actual active users that post good content and actually engage content posted by others.

If you're more of a developer then one way to annoy Reddit and the like is to create/contribute to tools that scrape content off Reddit and Twitter without using their paid APIs. These tools are used by many 3rd party sites / services that provide users better way to browse/archive content like images, videos and the like from reddit than reddit itself can.

    >how can we ensure and establish FOSS federated ones
By making it actually good and usable, and I mean for real, none of that "uhh what's the use case?? nah you don't need that/oh yeah it's done this specific convoluted way :)" gaslighting cope homosexualry.
But FOSS trannies won't ever cave in with that, so it's no use.

FOSS will never work for this because the people developing FOSS social media software have zero interest in prioritizing the features that make social media functional.

Check out all the dumb issues things like Mastodon/Pleroma/Misskey have.

An example: Mastodon will DDoS small sites when generating a preview due to every server doing this even if no one requested the post linking it. This is a issue that hasn't been fixed for like 6 years and it just leads to sites blocking their user agent.

      Anonymous

Or even worse, the people developing the software are so dogmatic that they will check your past posting history in other sites and if it violates their code of conduct, they will refuse your commits even if they fix bugs (see GoToSocial).

Both will be tricky. For Reddit, its death by a thousand cuts. We need to revive forums. For Discord, easiest way is with a decentralized chat protocol like IRC or XMPP (btw frick off with the overused xkcd 927 comic) that isn't bloated, centralized, zionist botnet like Matrix.

    Destroy the CIA.
Reddit and Discord are not meant to make money. They are meant to serve a purpose.

All American tech companies exist to act as de facto but informal extensions of the government apparatus.

DARPA's Lifelog became Facebook, Instagram, Meta, etc.

Google was born out of MDDS grants from the CIA and NSA.

For a very brief period of time, reddit was incredibly useful for finding a quick solution to some obscure tech problem - stack overflow and similar sites can fill the same niche, usually with better moderation. Provided you're not looking for code help. I also started revisiting older forums that either never had a subreddit usurp their presence online, or managed to stay alive during the 2010s. Better experience.
You aren't going to supplant Discord. They made IRC flashy for zoom zooms and built Skype/Teamspeak right into it. It is very good at what it does.
