I'm not even considering their cpus until they release something that's a significant leap.

For both games and productivity there's no reason to wait for anything unless you're holding out for higher core count complexes.
16 core single ccx good for gaymes. 32 cores on two ccx good for everything else.
Otherwise you're just getting 10 and some change ipc uplift for the rest of time and who cares.

Yeah, I'd really like a single 16 core CCD that can at least get set to 65w and is about a 50% increase in ipc. The idea is to double the cores with a significant ipc increase each time.

You're just moving the goalposts, we know it will be "better" but the clockspeed regression is objectively a bad thing and is going to affect the entire stack from being as good as it can be.

The goal is shaving off the power load when idle, something Euros can't seem to shut the frick up about.
Otherwise why is it a sticking point for you? It's possible to poke around the bios and set the cpu to sit anywhere between those frequencies or change boost behavior.

Going from base 4.5Ghz to 4.3Ghz at the same 170W TDP is a straight up regression no matter how you try to spin it.

And it was still bad, but we found out it was an artificial limitation as the processor at full load was maxing out the limit on power consumption you could do on the motherboard and heat. And in practice, the processor would maintain 3.6 GHz base clocks on any setup that wasn't throttling at idle.

Nah the "RDNA" 5 clean sheet design is going to happen. If that doesn't work out then AMD's graphics division will bifurcate into apu/datacenter and the traditional discrete gamer gpu will be completely ceded to nvdia and intel if they're still around.

The E cores are rumored to be massively improved especially with homogenizing the ISA so there's no AVX-512 issues like with Alder Lake. And if they are killing hyperthreading to actually use in flight offloading of threads and execution, I think it is probably the right approach. I think we need to see it in action though, we should get more details at Computex since Pat is presenting too but I feel like he is going to wait until Intel's event in September.

Intel would probably get a 10-15% die reduction if they completely removed AVX-512 and HT on consumer chips. HT hasn't mattered since 12th gen since core priority is P -> E -> P (HT) either ways.

          Anonymous

HT removal is going to help, but I think AVX-512 unfortunately is inevitable and it's the one thing over competitors like ARM x86 is going to be exploiting when all ARM has standardized at best with SVE2 is 128 bit vectors.
Also, with this, I think Zen 4 is going to be around the same or worse on Spec2017 per core in IPC as M4 given the 16% uplift on average.

            >TDP is not power consumption, it specifies how much cooling you need.
And they are both the same from the same company using the same measuring metrics for said TDP on this new dense node that you assert and yet the base clock speed is down gen on gen.

            Anonymous

as process nodes shrink the heat is concentrated in an ever smaller point in the cpu so you need more cooling for the same amount of heat
in real life cpus rarely sit at base clock, it adjusts the clock speed depending on the power limit and temperature

            Anonymous

The justification doesn't matter and I am well aware of what factors can be the cause of that which your explanation is one of them, the end result is the same. Same TDP, less clock speed at base gen on gen.

You're just moving the goalposts, we know it will be "better" but the clockspeed regression is objectively a bad thing and is going to affect the entire stack from being as good as it can be.

            Okay,

Why do you think the clock speed went down? Do you even know what clock speed is limited by?

I'm not asserting any reason why, it can be a variety of factors like

as process nodes shrink the heat is concentrated in an ever smaller point in the cpu so you need more cooling for the same amount of heat
in real life cpus rarely sit at base clock, it adjusts the clock speed depending on the power limit and temperature

as an example which I am aware of. The point I am making is that this is an objectively bad thing in the year of 2024 when we have had nearly 50 years of microprocessor advancements. But to me, the most likely explanation is economics, the yield AMD are trying to hit and the number of chips that can hit the target base clockspeeds for the 7950x reference numbers vs the 9950x reference numbers take too much to do so the bar was lowered so they can pinch pennies here.

This base clock for laptop has nothing to do with the tsmc node rather the AMD architecture design
The same base cTDP would be higher in desktop with higher base clock
It's true TSMC node is near limits for silicone material
      Something else from AMD is

They've been moving R&D to India

Higher base clock isn't good for fricking laptop chips where efficiency of battery life matters the most

The Zen5c core works at lower frequency.

Windows laptops with highest battery life from both AMD and Intel has the lowest base clock of 1.0-2.0ghz
Mobile ARM chips from Apple M or Snapdragon SoCs have better battery life than x86 chips due to this most of them have insanely low base clock during its idle and sleep
