      Typical laptop battery is 60Wh.
Let's say you save 30% on battery life, which is optimistic, and you need 2 full charges to make it through the day.
So you save 36Wh every day.
      1080Wh in 30 days, about 1kWh.

You live in Europe where electricity is super expensive? that will be 22 cents.
      America? 8 cents?

One day we're going to burn up all the oil, coal and gas we can economically extract anyways.
Nobody is leaving any of their fossil fuels in the ground, not even "green" countries like Norway.

So saving energy doesn't make any difference whatsoever.
At most we're delaying the moment fossil fuels run out by a couple of years.

Got any battery life stats on same hardware to prove the claim?

I'd like to support the claim that GNU+Linux is more efficient, as in theory it is more optimized and should consume less electricity, but in reality usually on laptops the autonomy gets worse because of drivers that are not as good as those for Windows. I got friends who tried GNU+Linux and got half of the autonomy they had on Windows by default. Maybe there are ways to tweak that, but they obviously just installed back Windows as any sane people would. I'm pretty sure that there are still problems with hardware video decoding in some browsers (such as LibreWolf and Brave) too, and software video decoding results in a much higher energy consumption.
Though, I would say that, on my Thinkpad X250, I have a good autonomy in GNU+Linux, and you have to consider that I would be forced to buy a new computer if I were a Windows user (because of end of support and slowdowns of the OS), which wouldn't be environmental friendly. Electricity where I live (France) is mostly green (thanks nuclear power), so keeping your computer for longer is more important than energy consumption.

The "perfectly working devices" were inefficient shit, so in the long run it probably still saves emissions by getting rid of the trash. Besides, the reasons were security and not environmental.

        Anonymous

        >in the long run it probably still saves emissions by getting rid of the trash
Exactly the same thing was said about replacing petrol cars with EVs, and any attempt at proving it resulted in proving that manufacturing a new car and disposing an old one actually produced more emissions than any possible reductions you get out of replacing gas with the electricity you get from dubious sources. France literally doesn't consider Chinese EVs green because the transport from China to France alone, not even counting the manufacturing, is polluting as frick.
Forgive me if I don't believe for a second that the exact same pro-consumerism lie applied to a different object is true this time.

          Anonymous

Even ignoring that China burns the most coal in the world, they also probably dump most plastic into oceans in the world, and this has nothing to do with transporting things from China to France. It's really odd how in this absolute state, they ban plastic straws and try to replace cars that just work with EV's

          Anonymous

          >electricity you get from dubious sources
Seems like the bigger problem here, besides it's a very different topic given how much more CO2 intensive car manufacturing is compared to consumer tech.
          >France literally doesn't consider Chinese EVs green
Meh, let's not act like there aren't political factors involved here. Do they do the same for EVs from Japan or Korea?

Generally, we live in a society built on c00nsuming, so it makes sense to trying involve it into the solution by making the consumption less harmful than trying to stop it. Like, lol, look how triggering an option to save power was. "You can't buy any more shit unless in breaks for 5 years" would make mfs do a riot or kill themselves.
