Major CueCat vibes. (If you remember what that is, you're too old to be here, that includes me.)

I have two. Once you declaw them they're awesome to have around and avoid the drudgery of entering numbers.

I remember the cuecat at radioshack.
The idea was dumb and not secure, but also ahead of its time. Now instead of CRQs and a wired scanner it's QR squares and your "smart"phone.
Truly nothing new under the sun.

QR codes are some bullshit. It's literally just a 2D barcode and 99% of the time it's a fricking internet address that could just be QCR'd by the camera, but they're made out to be some type of awesome data medium.

          That's a very moronic take
QR codes have error bits, are easily distinguishable, can be customized and are easy to slap on anything
Text on the other hand is much more fluid

I carry a black Sharpie with me at all times and when I see QR codes I fill in several of the dots on them.

I'm sure someone in China does that

I carry a black Sharpie with me at all times and when I see QR codes I fill in several of the dots on them.

Do you randomly fill it in or do you actually know how QR codes work?

Thank you for prompting me to look up how they work. I was usually just filling in the alignment mark in the bottom right. Now I'll go after the timing marks too

usually doesnt work, they can work with like 1/3rd completely blocked

is there anything in the hardware that's salvageable? i remember when juicero blew up the internals were actually pretty cool.

If they replaced the projector with a screen and sold it as a watch it could actually be useful.

The product/service was stupid but the internals was just giving the engineering team a blank check.

Unlike the rabbit thing, I can see uses for a device like the AI Pin, like narrating the environment for people with impaired vision, or projecting helpful data for a technician working on some complex machinery without burdening him with AR glasses.

The idea that the mass consumer needs something like it is absurd, and I'm not surprised it failed.

hospitals are already using something like this, but the tech is nowhere near as good as it could be. i'm in the mat ward with my wife at this exact moment and all of the nurses have a badge that will auto dial (or be dialed) by other nurses or rooms. the voice recognition is pretty shit though and they usually need to try and dial twice before it goes through; i think it might be processed locally on the badge. a per ward LLM that was trained on the nurses/doctors names and worked with them regularly would be great.

    i have a question
the humane pin is this company's first product
they've existed since 2018 and got a tonne of funding
what were they even working on b/w founding and the relatively recent llm-driven assistant craze?

      Anonymous

They probably blew it on "project texts onto the user's palm" gimmick since their founding was well before the LLM bubble.

Apple should buy them; it would be easy to make it work with Siri/rest of iOS stuff, and iToddlers are the only group I can think of that would be will to wear such a device, as long as it is Apple logo shaped of course.

This is possibly the most egregious example of scrolljacking wannabe-apple startupslop web design I have ever seen. A full minute to scroll to the bottom of the page when there's maybe two paragraphs of actual information, separated out by stupid fricking powerpoint transitions.

Whoever designed this abomination of website should be immediately fired and banned from ever importing another trendy javascript framework ever again.
