Apple hired a recycling company to recycle phones but in reality they were shredded, even working phones. The company decided it was a better idea to resell them instead so Apple sued.

"If consumers knew the volume of quality products that were being destroyed every day, they would be shocked,” Wiens says. As for the GEEP workers who stole and resold iPhones, he says, “I would argue that they were doing God’s work."

this is ok and would not affect vidya unless you need to switch your gpu every 2 years or something. i would say that at 10 devices per decade and 100 tech pieces per decade i will be fine. ( cables are tech pieces )

Ok but if they had a contract that phones would be recycled, it doesn’t matter if they were getting shredded or sold either way Apple is right to sue them no?

Legality and morality sometimes overlap but they're separate things. They most likely have the legal right of way but it makes their brand look like shit (always has been lol)

Apple also sells user data illegally. Nobody cares. Users that are raped by Apple are even thinking "Apple = privacy" while their data is sold illegally to China and Russia.

What the company did was refurbishing but their contract with apple said recycling. They fricked themselves cause they wanted to make a quick buck. If they had had moral scruples they shouldn't have signed the contract in the first place.

There's nothing inherently wrong with shredding, as long as it isn't landfilled with general waste.

We need to start treating e-waste as future minerals, stockpile them separetely. Once you have enough materials in a relatively consistent composition, it becomes interesting to make a bespoke recycling process for it. That's billions of R&D and capex, having a 100 billion pile of possible profit just sitting there will make industry hungry. Once it's mixed with landfill it's gone and it's such a stupid waste.

The same is true for batteries which can't be efficiently recycled yet or solar panels. The stigma of stockpiling ewaste needs to dissapear, it essentially is a form of recycling.

That's literally how capitalism works, they can control the amount of supply to keep prices high and push people to buy new phones directly from them instead of refurbished bullshit.

It's the same reason why there's a desert in Chile full of fast fashion clothes, sure the manufacturers could just donate the unsold clothes but then that means that people who got the clothes wouldn't buy them anymore
