this, literally who cares about mutable distros anymore?

When the complexity and bloat is kept under control, a mutable distro is better. I'd understand if Nix had Android-level simplicity, but in reality it's a glorified makefile system with byzantine complexity and additional level of indirection for what can be done directly.

      >having to literally program the missing half of it just to configure one system
I bet Nix appeals to those people who construct massive wikis in Obsidian, instead of doing something productive.

This thing literally gave me brain tumor. Eventually you'll want to go beyond setting a couple flags (why would you need a system like that for trivial things, right?) and start doing shit that is supposed to be easy, like writing derivations for custom software and managing your dotfiles with it, which it supposed to do in the first place. Then the entire thing starts to resemble a colossal schizo mix of FHS paths, foreign config includes, and obscure Nix trickery, that (You) have to maintain. Except people are being paid for a job like this, and you aren't.

Having the entire system described in a bunch of configs might be great when you work at a hyperscaler, but it's not worth it for your personal system. It's just like configuring Emacs or Awesomewm, but by patching it from a python script for the twice the fun.

Frick NixOS, Arch is a burning trashcan but it's infinitely less tedious and 1000s of monkeys constantly fix the broken shit. Until someone makes an immutable distro that is as easy as Android (well-tested readonly core + one-click installer, no strings attached) I'll stay on it.

Void Autust has no idea why Arch is popular in the first place
        Not surprising
It will never be anything more than a hipster distro among hipster distros

You can literally read any package build and see what it does. They're usually quite concise and boil down to, "Fetch the source package at the link and build it like so then install it into this directory." If that's too much for you to handle, then Void is also outside the scope of your capabilities.
