Are doctors lawyers and engineers pillars of society

Is society held up by these three essential professions?
are all other jobs a derivative of these jobs?

I'm an engineer with a PhD.

metallurgy, fracture mechanics, control systems, rf electronics are all child's play compared to centering a div.

Ten years ago, I used to run experiments at a particle accelerator, using high intensity X-rays to monitor individual molecular layers of semiconductors as they formed thin films. Today I use python to glue AI prompts together and get paid more than 10x as much.

          Life is suffering.

            your PhD must have helped.
nobody is allowed to do ai without a PhD even if the PhD is in another field.

never forget when all the doctors, lawyers, and engineers got to stay home for the pandemic but all the "essential workers" had to keep working because society would literally fall apart if they didn't.

no. to quote James Fitzjames Stephen, "Society could survive without doctors, but not without farmers."

Lawyers continued doing their lawyer thing during the Pandemic
The primary change was that the dress code relaxed somewhat

The Pandemic has actually been pretty good to lawyers in the USA as it made the more archaic court systems consider remote meetings and electronic submissions of documents where doing so wasn't already (at least partially) standard.

Well yeah no shit. Telecommunications made it possible for them to work from home. You can draft legal documents from home. You can't do plumbing from home.

Let's add a more general "scientist" because they (among other things, sometimes horrible) sefeguard the efficacy or danger of drugs and other things that get released to the public - from foot massagers to child car seats & restraint systems. They, like lawyers, are an integral form of justice.

I started medical school (non-American) not because of social pressure from third world parents, but because I read too many book, and far too much about late medieval-early modern humanists.

It's insane to me that anyone would want to work on the frontline in the medical field. I can't imagine having to do all those hours working with not just the public, but the sick public. The money isn't even that good in the grand scheme of things. You either have to be insane or just have pressure from your parents to want to be a doctor.

The exams are tough and they are purely merit based. Take a look at the pass rates for the solicitor's qualifying exam in England.

the job of a lawman is to stop people from enacting justice themselves. if there we no lawyers there would be no dictatorship
