I don't need the additional speed + it's KISS and not needlessly complicated + it's cheaper.

No. I use all of them. NVMe as a system drive for the recent AM5 PC I've built myself this year. My SATA SSD from 10(+?) years ago still werks too. Why would I throw 500 extra GB away? I still own a working 1TB HDD from 00's too.

I want the pcie lanes for other purposes. I have a windows vm with it's own gpu, usb card, and sata card in passthrough.

I use both, 500GB NVME for system, 2TB SATA for storage. (and 4TB good old hard disk as usb for backups and stuff)
Why? Because 2TB was a lot cheaper in SATA when I bought it, and because I only have one NVME slot and did not want to waste a pci slot with a nvme card.
Anyway, NVME was a bad idea, we should have had SATA 4 instead, so the drives could be on the motherboard on laptops but away from the heat of the GPU and CPU in desktop cases.

wdym her name is asuka. that’s japanese.
if i remember right her mother german/japanese and her father was american or something.
it’s just explaining away why a german girl is able to speak perfect japanese though really.

ah, yeah asuka is a strange name for a full german. The fact she speaks japanese ... well she can't write it, but yeah no one says she has an accent or anything, which means she's had a japenese speaker in her life. But it wouldn't be weird for a purpose-trained child soldier to be taught the language of they'll need to speak for service. Ultimately though, you've convinced me.

2.5 is a nice form factor
        provides enough surface as heatsink
        you can mount them anywhere
        hotswap bays are cheap
they use M3 screws unlike the garbage size used by 3.5 drives
not limited by silly motherboard slots
always have a usb-SATA converter laying around
reaching a SATA port to attach a temporary cable is much easier then accessing an M2 slot

Because I don't want to have to completely take down my tower and lay it flat to unscrew it in the event I need to do maintenance. It is infinitely more convenient to open the side panel and simply unplug it from the port. They're all SSDs and connected via velcro dots, so I don't even have to unscrew anything due to the lack of moving parts. I even tried installing my OS on an NVMe and you know what? It was a massive fricking meme. All the performance was 99% coming from my new CPU and I'm not bothering with the headache of an NVMe just so I can load vidya 2 fricking seconds faster on notoriously long loading segments.

Seriously, NVMes are a massive meme from my experience. Unless you're building a workstation or doing some serious enthusiast tier shit, it's in zero way fricking worth the hassle.

It's a Server/NAS. All the slower drives are in RAID6 and 4Tb NVMe SSD is used as a BCACHE.

I use a handful of drives.
1tb NVMe for with a partition for / and /home.
2tb HDD for frequent backups of my entire system.
2tb HDD for backups of those backups.
4tb HDD for archiving photos and videos since 2008.
4tb HDD for backups of those archives.

I have optical disks for the videos, photos, programming and manuscripts that I keep at my parents and uncles house in case of a fire or other damage to my property.
