Is this really it? Whats the battery size of the AMD laptop? Isn't AMD releasing a new gen this or next month too?? It'll be beat in both pure performance and battery life at that point.

      >missed opportunity for snapshisters

duh, the only difference between an arm/x86/riscv cpu is the frontend, once you get past the decoders it's no longer arm/x86/riscv anyway.
Qualcomm will probably never match Intel or AMD's performance, Apple was the most valuable company in the world for over a decade are still trailing behind in performance.
They get better battery life though, since ARM is simpler and has simpler decoders, complex decoders use more power and take more floorspace.

The battery life isn't real if you just shoehorn x86 support in via some compatibility layer which is what 99% of windows users will do because there's no fricking software.
Nobody looks at the microsoft defaults and goes "yeah i wanna use this" and they fricking know it because this is the 14 billionth time they have tried to replace mspaint with something inferior and mspaint is third-party software they bought back in the 90s when it was pc paintbrush by zsoft
Imagine. A company's software from nearly 4 decades ago still fricking mogging you today.
        They even ruined notepad.

They really should've released "developer" versions a year in advance for devs to get a head start. I have no idea why they wouldn't.
This was and still is fricking moronic. Microsoft just could not grasp that the names "windows 11" and "recall" as well as copilot are now universally hated more than clippy and ME and they took down snapdragon X by association.

      >They really should've released "developer" versions a year in advance for devs to get a head start.
It wouldn't have changed anything. Outside of a few lost souls and ARM investors no one gives a shit about ARM or wants ARM on the desktop.
      >I have no idea why they wouldn't.
Because what I said above aside MS is terminally moronic. People mocked Ballmer back in the day but compared to where MS is now he was a strategic genius that was decades ahead of the market.

It wouldn't have helped this specific processor but it would've helped Windows on ARM in general.
You can't just expect everyone to accept a "new" (i know, but from a windows' user's perspective) processor architecture when there's nothing to run.

This is like the 5th time Microsoft & Qualcomm have tried launching Windows on ARM laptops, though their prior efforts had a lot less hype around them. Someone who really, really wanted to make ARM native apps could have picked up one of those prior laptops. Or for that matter, could have ran ARM Windows on a Mac, lol.

It's "coming soon" as I'm booting it up right now. I do plan to throw privacy out the window and use it, though.

        >Anything specific I should test on it, anons?
nah, it's just shit. If it at least had a decent integrated GPU you could test some games

I really don't care about games, it's all about the Microsoft software stack for me. If it does half the things I hope it can, it would dramatically increase my productivity

But since I have the hardware, was just curious if anyone had specific testing in mind

          Anonymous

I would like to suggest doing some battery life testing now, and then redo the tests once Microsoft enables the "Recall" feature, to see what sort of impact it has when running in the background. I have a sneaking suspicion that part of the reason the cut it out for launch was to try and juice up the battery life numbers.

It's a hotbox, as anticipated. Nothing close to a FANLES M3. It uses double the power and heat to still lose to last year's M3. Not to mention the heinous compatibility bugs reviewers are running into for anything that isn't Office or Chrome. I feel vindicated. Frick Microsoft, and frick Qualcomm. You don't hype something this long without having to hide something. https://youtu.be/dT4MstOicfQ?si=99objzs31-VhZX8I&t=610

bullshit, it uses 20-30% more power at max. They dun goofed by not having e-cores
I predict that Intel, of all the companies, will win at power efficiency this generation.

honestly looks like CPUs are all the same nowadays, and the real difference comes from semiconductor tech

M3's max power draw is 21W, and I've now heard several reviewers say this pulls 50W alone to keep up with it. I don't care to go look it up, these are shit laptops.

          >M3's max power draw is 21W
it can max out at 56W or so

I said the m3's max draw not the m3 max you disingenuous moron. The shit X elite ain't even trying to compete with the max chips.

The M4 is supposed to be even more efficient. Qualcomm is a good 4-5 generations behind Apple and these cost more than the M3 Air which can run W11ARM perfectly with Parallels.

It's solidly m2 territory. Qualcomm's 12 P-core essentially matches an 8P+4E M2 Pro in all ways. Too bad for them an M3/M4 can do that too with 8 and 10 cores and half the power! I like Strix point but it suffers the same fate. 12-core 4nm chips using 30-50W are literally just m2 pro rehashes. Reminder, that came out in January 2023. This is old news. but glad Wingays can eat nicely when Strix Point and Lunar Lake come out next month.

I think Qualcomm was just trying to get their name on the board with this iteration. Nobody expected them to match Apple and I don't think it's going to happen for a while. Hell, Lunar Lake might even beat the X Elite this year.

This. Ballmer literally built and setup the entire foundation that the current company is built on.
He was the one who established .NET and the developer first mantra.
