they both look like terrible interactive-movie-like games from the depths of uncanny valley to sedate and extract the fed's IOUs from teenagers who have no idea how much more fatalistic their lives will be than jocund amusements like these suggest.

      cont.

that said, nethack is a damned good game, and most decent games were made or at least conceived before 2000, and everything after 2010 is straight bullshit.

i also warmly remember neverwinter nights, baldurs gate, diablo, and a few other rpgs and puzzle games, and a few arena shooters, though the latter are honestly just as mindless as any modern game if i'm honest.

i promise though, video games will eventually fail to provide meaningful gratification. at best, they are a diversion. certainly they seem to do a good job at placating one's desire for purpose, duty and freedom, and any such thing that does not actually represent such things but merely offers a debased gratification in the vein thereof is quite evil. i used to think that girls didn't like games as much because they knew better, but it could also be that they simply don't care about the objects that such forms of entertainment are intended as surrogates for.

i suppose at this point one can elect to perform the necessary mental contortions to convince themselves they aren't being made a mockery of, but would anyone really want to degrade themselves to the point of having zero self respect?

and certainly it would leave one's mind in a bit of a state for any other purpose as well.

Reading the ASOIAF books now. I'm quite underwhelmed, I thought it would be an even better version of the show but it feels so goddamn slow in its pacing. It feels like I've read 5 Bran chapters where he just laments on his disability.

The pacing issue is mainly because you've already watched the show. It gets better as you see more of the stuff that was cut. My only recommendation is that you read the last 2 books in the Ball of Beasts order which is the closest we can get to George's initial plan for the book before he split it into two, ruining the pacing.
