Audiobooks are great if you're a blind person.

That is more an issue with you than an issue with audiobooks.

It's a less intimate reading experience from my perspective. Words paint the imagination differently when hearing them versus sitting in silence and absorbing them directly.

So reading = masturbation and audiobooks = sex? Would explain a lot about this place if IQfy actually read.

It's the other way around. I meant that audiobooks were less intimate.

Right, that is what I said. Masturbation is the closest we can come to true self sufficiency, nothing is more intimate than it is.

I listen to classical music when I read books

Eh. Music would get in the way of me trying to imagine the sounds.

Yeah. They're only good for drowning out your own thoughts, not actually absorbing anything.

Just got back into books and I absorb and retain easily through audiobooks but less so through reading actual books. I can imagine some people would get easily distracted and that would be a problem.

Yeah. No one ever learned by listening. Skills, mythology, and history were never transferred from one person to another before the creation of writing.
Do you ever stop to think about the thoughts you have? Or do you post them here first?

If you think oral traditions are anything like listening to an audiobook then you're just a fricking idiot.

Some forms of oral tradition are more interactive, but how would something like sitting and listening to a bard reciting the Iliad be different than listening to an audiobook?

Audiobooks are a great idea, but they always get someone with a shit voice, charge $35, and make you jump through hoops to find it. How did they frick up this medium so bad?

Well-produced audiobooks are decent. Unfortunately librivox audiobooks are an absolutely abhorrent auditory assault.

The one time audio books fail is with the prose stylist who exploit the written language beyond what the spoken language can convey. Other than that if you can not understand a book being read to you as well as you can understand a book you are reading that is your own fault.

But many of the prose stylists have wonderfully well done audio books and even if you miss the nuances of the prose they can make easier to see (hear) the nuances of the narrative.

They suck for philosophy and fiction, but they're perfectly fine for simpler non-fiction works, like books by therapists and neuroscientists.

i can't stand audiobooks. if they're too slow they just put me on edge, i hate having a breathy moron reading words into my ear. if i make the speed faster i have the same problem as you aka i cannot retain anything.

What's with the hostile, borderline feminine reply? Nobody said that or even implied that. I'm just calling OP a moron, maybe it hit too close to home for you?

I think they work better for some people than others. I also find that strangely I find it easier to keep my focus on an audiobook if I listen to it while doing a mindless task like washing the dishes than if I just sit there.

I just finished Tad Williams Memory, Shadow, and Thorn series and I can't understand why it's so highly recommended. It drags on forever, and at the end, it feels like 90% of what happened was fricking pointless. The damn climax has the main character drop the fricking sword and then get mind controlled into standing still until he says "i won't hate you or some bullshit and then the big bad (who is barely a character at all gets one shot
    What a waste of time.
