    typical grad problems
    check services you sped.
ssms is the application to manage a sql server, but you also need to host it, like tomcat or node or express.
install ssms, go to services, make sure MSSQLSERVER is running.
    connect to it via localhost

lol everything related to Microsoft will do that sooner or later
    >just install visual studio
    >oh looks like it didn't work this time, have you tried deleting %APPDATA%/roaming/installer0120239falj2092092834/temp2/cache/ and then going into the registry and deleting the 0120239falj2092092834 keys in all ten locations and then running Windows update KB6234982 and then redownloading the VS installer again and running it in safe mode with the /log command line option?
    >hmm that should have worked, let's try reinstalling Windows from scratch, do you have another computer handy?
summary: if you ever work in a Microsoft shop you WILL be dealing with this exactly at the worst possible times, and everyone else in the office will pretend that jumping through hoops is normal

Nah, you're a brown ESL third worlder. When you install SSMS, you also need to make sure you install the SQL Server engine, since they're different things.

Everyone likes to shit on Linux not being user friendly, but when things start to go south in Windows it's always some seriously arcane bullshittery exactly like this. Had to do something similar to get Minecraft (the shitty non-Java version) of all things working the other day.

Saaaar please run SFC /Scannow and upvote my answer on microsoft technet have a blessed day

Why are they like this, and why does Microsoft allow their forum to be rendered utterly useless because of these people?

How are you this stupid and somehow still alive. If you're using windows just install docker or set it up through wsl, it's so simple a monkey could do it.

How can you frick up installing MS SQL Server when it's literally a "next next next on the installer" deal.
