Big Tech Layoff Anxiety

I work at a big tech company and am 90% sure there is a big re-org coming and I am constantly stressed that I will be caught in the crossfire. I can't focus on my normal work with all this bullshit happening in the background - how do you guys deal with it? Is tech always just a volatile timebomb?

The best advice a boomer ever gave me was: always be looking for a job. If you're concerned then that's just a sign that you need to reorganize your resume, start searching in your field, and try to see what you're really worth and to whom.

If you're looking for a job constantly, even if there is no threat of ever being fired from your current position, then you are constantly aware of what the alternative can be, you're always prepared in case the rug gets pulled, and you'll know how much you may have to live on sometime in the future in order to save, plan, and invest. Looking for a job is more than just getting a job, it's keeping an eye out on the prospects of your education and experience.

Use this as a wake-up call, start calling contacts, calling people whom you may be interested in working with, updating your references, never tell anyone why you may be doing this, and if they ask, make up some excuse about being subjected to a background check.

General rule of thumb: If you are aware that there may be shake-ups within a company, check the industry's stock portfolio and volume traded to see if your company may be headed down that path. No company does layoffs as a first-response measure to growth. If there is still stock volume, the competition is still growing, and the economy doesn't suck: you likely won't get laid off.

Background is I'm a mechE w/ MBA and got tired of listening to other MBAs explain to me why US man'fing is impossible to do profitably. It's only impossible to make money if you're stupid, which most of them are, so more money and less competition for me. I compete directly with the chinese, who copy all my stuff, and still hold my own. The only downside is it's boring af so the consulting work keeps my brain working, and current with whatever is new, I just try not to do it full time anymore.

The ones sitting in the penthouse offices are beginning to notice the dip in their pay and the massive dips in overall earnings. It's a cute idea until it costs the economy untold trillions of dollars anon. You'll see a lot of "detransitioners" "telling their story" on national tv, news stations like cnn etc will come out apologizing. And the public will eat right out of their hands. And why? They'll be so grateful that things have a small semblance of "returning to a state of normal" that they'll readily accept the other changes that the ruling powers will be enforcing that they'll say:
        >well the tradeoff is, i can afford my house and my car and my 401k and my family.
They'll look the other way. The "mentally ill" will be rounded up and put into mental facilities. Tv media will denounce it as evil all over tv shows.
