          Anonymous

it depends on how you define "OS"
linux is in a bit of a unique situation, which is why this question comes up so often. every other OS ships with a kernel and some basic form of userland, together are called the OS, but linux doesn't come with a userland, there's kind of a defacto one, but it's not universal and it's still not made or shipped by the people who make linux
linus, the person who makes linux, calls linux an OS, and by the simplest definition of an OS, it certainly can be (a software program that abstracts hardware to some degree to allow for software to be written for said abstraction rather than hardware directly, that is what a kernel does as well)
if you went off what most OS's use, being the kernel and the userland that ship together, then only distros can be OS's

question: do you consider MS-DOS to be an OS? a bare minimal MS-DOS consists of 3 files, MSDOS.SYS (kernel), IO.SYS (drivers/init), and COMMAND.COM (shell), since the shell is replaceable, you're left only with the kernel and drivers/init, which is actually equivalent to linux on its' own, so if you were to run ms-dos with an alternate shell, are you still using ms-dos? is it still an os?

Topkek. No, on linux you have no expectation of backwards compatibility. You get the version in the repo, if you're trying to use something else, you're breaking the system. Not that windows is getting better, but with systemD, wayland and the whole gnome project, no way you can say its getting better.

He's right. When Sony or Nintendo decides to close the online shop of a game console, if players lost access to the games they bought they'd be pissed off and demand a refund. I don't use Valve and I don't know how it works but it seems that this is what happened here, the guy lost access to the games he bought because their software dropped support for Win7 while still advertising games as running on Win7.

      >I don't use Valve and I don't know how it works but it seems that this is what happened here
Then you have no idea what you are talking about.
Valve doesn't gain anything by limiting their market. Sony and Nintendo get paid by forcing users to migrate to newer consoles. Valve doesn't make windows, they don't get anything from people upgrading their Microsoft license.

What actually happened was that Google deprecated embedded chromium framework for Win7 which Steam depends on. The games will continue to work just fine, but the steam client might stop working or will be stuck at old, potentially insecure version of chromium. Terminal version of steam will probably work indefinitely anyway.

I still only use it inside a VM on a Linux host but it just works with minimal "debloating" via policies.

I blocked all steam ports a month before Jan, 1st. I can still play all the games I had installed, obviously not all the games in my library. I'd transplanted steamlibrary folders before, that used to work, but MS probably pressured game developers to push W10/W11 specific libraries into older games, as there are titles which I had installed working fine. I move those to another directory, substitute the folder with a newer one from the W10 computer, and tada, it doesn't work anymore. Because they hamfist unsupported dlls into a game that was originally playable on W7, in some cases even WXP.

Ubisoft, and Capcom started doing this the moment January arrived, Capcom morseso trying to push their crummy new drm to discourage game mods. I'm sure EA will do the same if they haven't already, luckily I managed to preserve the games I play the most. I'll probably be the last man on planet Earth to have an offline playable version of SFV on Windows 7...

I'll warn all WIndows 10 users now, you'll be pulled kicking and screaming "into the future," next year. I recommend you install all the games you care to play offline in the last three months, before MS enforces the eol cutoff date for retail, non-enterprise/iot licenses. On my W7 machine I still can get on the internet to browse and download programs or watch YT. steamcmd does is not a workaround for an outdated version of steam either, to use that you have to give access of the internet to steam which puts you at risk for an unwanted client-specific downloads/update before it launches.

Windows 7 hit end of life in 2020 but was still supported by Steam until the start of 2024, and that was actually Google's fault for deprecating parts of Chromium that Steam runs on. If what you're describing does happen, it's not gonna be as soon as next year. You know why Valve just canned support for 7 once Google forced their hand, instead of making a workaround? Per their hardware surveys, nobody uses it. Literally less than 1% of their userbase. Meanwhile 10 is still the most used in spite of MS shilling 11.
Also, if you wanted offline older copies of games, why not just pirate them?

11% is still pretty significant given the size of Steam's userbase imo. The real test will be the numbers next year after the official end of life. 11 is likely catching up because prebuilt PCs come with it rather than a conscious install choice.

Valve sells plenty of old games that barely even work right on anything newer than XP yet they force you to run 10/11 just to launch a game that doesn't even support 10/11.
It's absolutely Valve's fault. GOG doesn't force me to do this, they let me just download a normal installer without having to use their special snowflake launcher.
