As a mobile dev is there realistically any option other than an Macbook?
Antitrust lawsuit when?

I think the best you can do is use a hackintosh VM
I don't really develop for iOS but I did use xcode on such setup to jailbreak my appleTV and it worked very well

you should have the confidence to earn at least double the cost of the laptop, so it should not matter

Idk I earn enough to have a somewhat disposable income. I'm a webdev but I develop an open source mobile app in my spare time and I want to bring it to IOS.

I recently caved and bought a bought a macbook air m3 on special.

cross compilation from Linux is possible but 99.99% of iOS projects use Xcode project files which you can’t open. So working on your side project is possible but not on open source or at a company.

Most devs I've heard of who have a Mac just for iOS builds use a Mac Mini. Looks like they're a lot cheaper?

yeah I considered that and it is a valid option but I don't currently have a personal laptop (I just use my work windows laptop) and spending $1000 AUD on a mac mini is already most of the way to a macbook air for $1600.

I can't really justify having a macmini collecting dust that I would only use for iOS builds but I can justify having a macbook air for the same purpose and I can use it at work and when I travel.

That's fair. I'm also considering a MacBook as my next laptop, though, if it was my personal device, I think it would be a problem if it had less than 16GB of RAM or if it could only drive a single external monitor, so that drives the price up.

NTA, workaround via adapters existed upon M1 Air.

From what I heard, it's a hardware problem. The entry level Macs only have two display controllers, and one of them is permanently assigned to the internal screen. If the solution is an software adapter (eg. DisplayLink dock/dongle,) I'm not interested. I've used them before for work and they suck.

yeah I ended up getting the 16gb m3 air which brought the price up to 2k AUD. Whatever, I'm not the type of person that upgrades yearly or even biyearly anyway so it should do me for a couple years.

nah modern macbooks are too risky because you can't swap the ram or ssd. For all you know some c**ts been doing blender renders on his 8GB air and fricked the SSD by using SWAP

There is nothing anti-competitive about using their ecosystem to create services for it. Either buy one or shut it, stupid fricking pajeet

I've always wondered why the people on this board are so cucked to literal trillion dollar corporations. It's not as bad as IQfy yet, but it's close. Apple aren't paying you bro.

You need specialized devkits to develop for gaming consoles for example. It's not something out of ordinary that we should lose our minds over it. At least you can install xcode on any mac.

That's fair. I'm also considering a MacBook as my next laptop, though, if it was my personal device, I think it would be a problem if it had less than 16GB of RAM or if it could only drive a single external monitor, so that drives the price up.

That's true. I personally have one of those m-series macbooks and it doesn't support more than a single external monitor. The saving grace is that I can just use my iPad as a second display over the cable (though there is also a fully wireless option with some cursor delay) with no perceptible delay so I can walk around with two portable displays. It helps especially when programming for an assignment with a lot of moving parts and strict rules to what we can use.
Given that sidecar is a native feature, I can also just close the lid on both my mac and my ipad, disconnect the cable, and resume what I was doing a day later with all the windows separated into the their respective displays.

If Google forced you to use Chromebooks to develop Android apps, all of IQfy would roar in a chorus of hate and anguish. When Apple does it, complete silence.

apple has a ecosystem to offer where people actually buy things google doesn't. Thats the key issue here apple has been gate keeping their stuff so it remains ((premium)) and people are fine with it because they make a lot of cash from it. On Android you need lots of people downloading your shitty app so you can sell micro transactions on apple people are willing to buy directly from the store and spend money on subscription bullshit. Not sure how the developer tools are from Apple but I assume its not like the constantly changing mess that Google sells you. If they wouldn't be such dicks much more people would be willing to pay for Google as well.
Anyway best option is to target web but mac people want native design so that might be a problem.
