Unemployable alcoholic who thinks he's deep for writing poems about taking watery shits caused by the active poisoning of his own body. Some of the most useless drivel I have ever read. I only read some of his poems and I immediately started rereading the Holy Bible afterwards to try and get the sour taste out of my mouth and the vicious pessimism out of my brain.

I've only read Post Office and I guess I got filtered since I didn't like it. It was just him showing up to work late and hungover, then b***hing about his wife and sometimes fricking some stay-at-home woman he'd see on his route. Went on like this for ~150 pages, then just ends. Not my thing I guess.

Very formulaic, mediocre writing that appeals to the masses because it is conversational, easy to understand, and full of quotable platitudes that people think are profound. Narcissists like the aesthetic of a drunken hobo who is secretly a genius because they believe themselves to be secret geniuses.

Him and Burroughs are the only 'Beats' worth preserving. Some great poems. Lots of filler in the mid to posthumous collections. Strong short story writer (the novels are nearly all bloated expanded versions). Better read than his reputation would indicate. Egregious forebearer of current year enjambment bullshit like Rupi Kaur. First few poetry releases and the short stories should suffice for most; he wasn't up to his novel idol John Fante's snuff.

Neither Bukowski or Burroughs were part of the Beat movement. Bukowski was Beat adjacent and Burroughs was simply a big inspiration in the movement. Figures why they're not as cringe as the beatnik county boys playing cowboy.

People won’t admit it, but he was the last great poet. After Bukowski, the landscape changed with technology and how people live their lives. You can’t have someone like him anymore. It’s all Rupi Kaur or YouTuber poem books. Humanity’s ability to created significant poetry disappeared at the end of the 20th century. However, I don’t think he was as great as the best poets in the canon, but he carried the mantle sufficiently and deserves the popularity he has gained. He tapped into aspects of America and modern life that captured the country. Kind of a depraved Walt Whitman just in that sense.

because he got more tight young pussy in his 50s than anyone on this board ever will in their entire lives. he also got his work published and has secured his place in the western canon, which is what all of IQfy dreams of

Because they are modern, right hemisphere brain dominated NPCs. They can't accept that poetry has never been about skill or obedience to metrical laws and form. No matter how brilliant you may think you are as a writer, if the Muse doesn't possess your soul you will not be a successful poet. The Muse chooses whoever she wants to bestow her inspiration to and let be a conduit for her thoughts. Classical poets pre 20th century understood this as they were still grounded consciously in the mythos of antiquity so understood how these things work (Read Robert Graves "The White Goddess" for an explanation of this phenomena). Bukowski didn't know he had many incarnations of the Muse through various young, wild women he dated and the torments both pleasurable and painful resulted in such classics as "Raw with Love" and "a 340 dollar horse and a hundred dollar prostitute"
