Yeah, if you ever have to work with JSON

no its for gays who don't know sed

i built a static site generator with jq and pandoc. it's a good dsl but not the most intuitive. anons who think they can parse json with sed are delusional and can safely be ignored.

are you using Pandoc's native JSON AST?

so useful it should honestly be part of the standard install on most linuxes

        Anonymous

Vast majority of linuxes run servers. Servers want a minimal install without any bloat, only the bare essentials. Non-essential packages and bloat increases both the attack surface and maintainence surface.

yes i use it all the time. if you are accessing an API for simple purposes, curl and jq are more than enough to do what you want. also useful for getting familiar with apis, or testing your own endpoints before writing the actual code.
a quick (but moronic because jq is unnecessary here) example:
      # show ext4 mounts
      findmnt -J | jq '.filesystems[].children[] | select(.fstype == "ext4")'

      not as useful as perl(1)

Develop what? Perl isn't that great. I actually ended up writing something in C instead because perl was pissing me off. Literally c was easier for me to read and write than perl.

            >Literally c was easier for me to read and write than perl.
I doubt you really tried it's not that hard, and doing the same stuff in C than you could be doing in Perl would requires a lot of programming or libraries

It's sort of like apl for arrays or awk for text. It has a niche for interactive use, but pushing it beyond that, or getting into multi line programs, you should go to a real programming language and reference the specs of wherever you are getting the json from.

I don't use bash at all, I use sh and rc (dabbled in a bit of es, but never used). Which is all I need for interactive use.
It will never be worth the effort to learn bash when you can just use a sane shell and commands.

No, excessive feelings leading to organisational discipline of undesirables is ridiculous and people should generally harden up a bit. It was obviously a joke. You then bore HR with your incredibly ridiculous jq knowledge and even regale them a story of how you used jq miraculously in one of your projects, saving the company weeks on a project (thousands of dollars). "Redpill" in this context means to discover the abilities of jq further than the shallow knowledge required to use the program to do a hello world.

Most (any serious) tool now has an option for JSON output. If you're trying to filter on structured data, it's vastly preferable to anything else, including glorious awk

I've used jq before, but I just checked and it's not in the default install of Debian so I forget it exists.
JSON is shite anyway, so when I really need to parse JSON for something quick I feed it to system python and use that instead.

when the random suckless unix shell philosophy selection of line editors (with slightly different implementation and behavior per each system and massive differences in regex; and where a single awk script would probably work 99% of cases, but lets be honest, most of them arent familiar with awk or sed in detail, just prompt oneliners from stackoverflow that maybe work, because "shell scripts and utilities are easy and you dont actually need to learn this shit"), separated by pipe, becomes too unpredictable poo in the loo, the shellshitters will give up and resort to inlining bits of perl or python for that extra readability

unfamiliarity with awk grinds my gears
we had a script floating around at work that piped grep into awk and then the output of that into cut
i cleaned it up with a single awk command
