Considering buying an iPhone

I've been using Android devices since around 2011 when I got a Kindle Fire for my 7th birthday. I've always thought of iDevices as shitty toys made to appeal to morons, minorities, women, and other lower forms of life, but recently my friend let me borrow his old iPhone SE (i think it was the 2nd gen one) and I actually liked it quite a lot. Everything was intuitive and there weren't any of the expected jitters or half-second lag spikes that I became accustomed to on my Pixel 7a. iMessage is cool too and it has the added benefit of the stupid blue bubbles that people in muttmerica (where i live) go crazy over. What will I lose by switching to base model 15? Android just seems to be going down the shitter and many of its advantages are either no longer a thing or the iPhone has its own equivalent.
>sideloading apps
Never used it except for Newpipe. As long as I can put MP3s on the iPhone (less convenient than Newpipe but whatever) and listen to them I don't care.

Get a pro, it's nice to have the rear lidar scanner - there's some cool apps which let you scan objects and people.
Mostly the iPhone differentiates itself with faceID and tight integration with iMessage and facetime. I use Android as my main phone though since I like being able to use Kodi and that's a no-go on iThings.

    >What will I lose
Sideloading, ad blocking, file explorer, microSD slot (maybe), NFC payments from certain banks, money from paying for dongles, FOSS options for many apps (not sideloaded apps, just ones on the play store)

    >What you gain
Better battery life, better camera (maybe), better processor, blue bubbelz.

Depending on what you think is important, iPhone might be better. But if you really prioritise the gains I listed over what you lose, do yourself a favor and get the frick off IQfy

lots of these ship with full blown settings for some reason, but they let you change the overall consumption at least

You’re convincing yourself that the extra uninstallable bloat on a galaxy phone for example, is good — when it’s not.
This android vs iOS conversation is useless because the only android worth owning literally ever is a pixel with graphene.
Which I know you’re not talking about because even a graphene pixel doesn’t really have all that much functionality. And the performance on it sucks too, including the battery.

            arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/03/android-sends-20x-more-data-to-google-than-ios-sends-to-apple-study-says/
            >Where Android stands out, Leith said, is in the amount of data it collects. At startup, an Android device sends Google about 1MB of data, compared with iOS sending Apple around 42KB. When idle, Android sends roughly 1MB of data to Google every 12 hours, compared with iOS sending Apple about 52KB over the same period. In the US alone, Android collectively gathers about 1.3TB of data every 12 hours. During the same period, iOS collects about 5.8GB.

and androids encryption is notoriously bad. https://arxiv.org/pdf/2105.12613.pdf
            > How about Android security? For starters, its encryption protections appear to be even worse than Apple's.
            >"Like Apple iOS, Google Android provides encryption for files and data stored on disk. However, Android's encryption mechanisms provide fewer gradations of protection. In particular, Android provides no equivalent of Apple's Complete Protection (CP) encryption class, which evicts decryption keys from memory shortly after the phone is locked. As a consequence, Android decryption keys remain in memory at all times after 'first unlock,' and user data is potentially vulnerable to forensic capture."

encryption is a meme, it only is useful against organized crime, state actors already have methods to circumvent that, as encryption is just like a secured tube where but on both ends can be compromised

      >Sideloading
False, sideloading just takes extra effort on iOS, and no, im not talking about the developer account renewal method. There are other methods that are literally just tap and download but you need to be on 17.1, we're on 17.2.1 i think.
      >adblocking
what do you mean by this? ublock origin? i guess, but brave shields works fine for that, i mean what sort of sites do you go to that only ublock origin works on? i cant think of any, the most ad-heavy site i can think of is aniwave, and brave shields blocks all of those popups/ads on there too. also i use protonvpn and a bonus is that it blocks ads system wide on my phone.

i havent bought any dongle at all, the wired lightning earbuds have a good dac for lossless up to 44KHZ i think. i guess i do need a dongle to charge and listen to music simultaneously, thats on my wishlist. but samsung does that shit too.
      >foss options
what type of foss options? the app store search sucks because Apple isnt a machine learning giant like google, but i promise you there are good foss options on ios.
      for example:
revanced: uyou plus elite for ios works on any ios version
      >chan app
      chance.

Never said that, and that’s not what the conversation is about. We were talking about not updating to have certain “jailbreak” tweaks, but only if OP wanted to, because not everyone cares about updooting, especially since there’s only a .1 difference (26 days delayed to be precise) between jail break tweaks fit for 17.1, and 17.3 which we are on already.

Practically every iOS update has a "this is actively being exploited" notice these days. And have you not seen the news? Operation Triangulation and Pegasus not ring any bells?
As far as I know it's all been targeted attacks so far, but there's no reason a mass compromise of normal civilians would be impossible.
It's only a matter of time until someone implements one of these fancy exploit chains the NSA and Mossad are using and starts compromising random outdated iphones.

            Anonymous

Fear mongering. What if some rogue mossad agent does the same to even updated iphones; compromising masses of iPhones all at once?
Wait, what if they do the same with Galaxies all over the world too (because you should know Pegasus works on android too)
            >I use graphene
How do you know they haven’t found a way to compromise graphene? After all, Daniel Micay himself has said that the closed firmware that Pixel runs on (and graphene) could be used maliciously

I've written about this before, and this is my opinion.
            There's 3 threat models
            1. Edward Snowden tier threat model; no smartphone will help you, graphene and custom roms run on closed source firmware blobs. At least on pc, you can de-blob and find hardware before 2008 when intel me and amd psp were made to spy on you. even the creator of graphene admitted this (https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/bd2fm7/comment/ekxc020/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)

Android users will just install malware themselves. It's not an interesting target for mass compromise campaigns. iOS very much is.
If opening yourself up to zero-click attacks is worth slightly easier sideloading, whatever, I'm not your mother, go nuts. But there's a difference between knowingly dismissing the risks and not knowing they exist in the first place.

off the top of my head, you hate samsung, but want equally the best battery/camera/performance in the market, and you also hate chink phones, and you also don't want a sony phone (for one reason or another); and you like the apple ecosystem and the optimization iOS and many of its apps/games offer (see

Games are also more optimized on iOS. Ask any gacha shitter. Genshin impact works best on iOS (120hz unlock too) and games like call of duty perform best on iOS

          or how simple things like

          [...]

work a lot better on iOS, locally, offline, without an internet connection.) Thats just scratching the surface from the quality of life features iOS has. for example, just last year, android finally added limited photo access (https://developer.android.com/about/versions/14/changes/partial-photo-video-access)
iOS has had this for over a decade.
          >webkit
          see

          [...]

theyre opening up the browsers, in case they block adblocking, with it being a weird move (which only google would do) i couldnt entertain this hypothetical of yours seriously, because Apple is the first company to start cracking down on trackers and ads (see Facebook losing record highs in billions for revenue after iOS launched an anti-app tracker feature)
          lets move on
          >Extract app assets
Conversation aside, why do you want to do this? I am genuinely asking. I concede on this point. There. Move the frick on. But answer my question. What type of shit do you do to necessitate this? Be specific. I'm intrigued. Sell me on Android. But don't be vague. Be specific. (Because on jailbreaked 17.1 iPhones, you can unlock hidden files/folders, but this is IQfy, we're not introducing beginner topics here. So don't move the goal posts and say "thats hard")

Your reading comprehension sucks. As I said earlier, comparing the operating systems are a moot point, because you don't use Android, without using a device with to load Android on; such as a Galaxy, which also need dongles. But when you talk about another phone that doesn't need a dongle, like say, X phone, you lose Y amount of features, important features (like a usable camera, usable chipset, acceptable battery, acceptable OS skin, etc.) So the fact you haven't brought up a specific phone to compare "iOS/iPhone" to; has brought the conversation to a halt. Because the only Android phone worth getting is a Pixel with Graphene; of which you need a dongle for too.
          🙂
          > Most EU banks
          Don't care. Not my problem.

Are you going to bring up a specific phone to start comparing an iPhone to, or are you just going to keep making up excuses, and twiddling with your thumbs hoping I don't notice that there isn't a single good Android flagship anymore that has a headphone jack, an SD card, and everything you expect out of a flagship. (Except a Sony, which I'm not completely sold on. Do you want to talk about Sony? Because all I'm getting from this conversation is that you use a Sony. I hope you do. Post a timestamp with your "dongle"less phone, because you're really hung up on having a phone without needing a dongle.

Just use whatever ffs. The differences are mild. It's the way you use it that matters. Call your mom and don't waste too much time on your phone.
Fwiw I use the galaxy a54. It just works. Gf uses some iPhone. It also just works. Sometimes I have to use her iPhone and I find it annoying asf. She also sometimes needs to use my phone, and finds it annoying asf. There are a bunch of minor differences in the user interface. They're usually minor, but there's a bunch of them. And it's really annoying to use the "other" device.
What I appreciate on Android: it's cheap asf and the battery is great. Yeah the battery is probably good on the iPhone and iPhone Pros, but they're expensive (where I live, not the USA).
If you really like shiny things get an iPhone. If you want to save some money get a cheaper android. It's basically all the same crap.

Didn’t read. Well I skimmed it but just to see if you had mentioned which phone you use. But you didn’t have the balls to say which phone you use so your opinion has been discarded.

Not really. It’s an undisputed fact Samsungs explode and have expanding batteries; at a significant higher rate compared to any other phone manufacturer including Apple.

Not this. Samsung forces you to have bloat which you can’t uninstall. He mentioned Samsung “giving you control”

I can uninstall literally every iOS app, except for the dialer and I think the settings app. You cannot say the same for Samsung. Comparing Samsung bloat vs apple bloat and saying apple is worse in terms of bloat is literally Lobotomy the Post.
            You’re a lolcow.

            moronic take again
no denying that bloat-free is good, but not better than having it and being able to disable it to forget those apps, while you can't do the same about iToy total system lockdown

            Anonymous

So you’re saying that Samsung bloat is good because you can disable it (not all of it)? You do realize that’s not even a coherent argument because Samsung literally re-enables bloat, and will REINSTALL BLOAT even if you use adb commands / or a script like universal debloater.

    iPhone/Mac user here
few things I want to touch on:
    1) get a mac with it, even a mac mini. Using iPhones with PC is painful, and you won't get the full experience.
    2) I own both a PC and a galaxy s20 ultra. I am going back to Android soon. The OnePlus 12 looks so promising. I like to flip flop so I know how things are on both sides.
    3) don't break it because repairing it is going to be expensive as frick and you lose functionality

I don't use anything Apple. The last Apple product I bought was the iPod Video 5.5 Gen, as well as their full sized wired keyboard that was thin and cool.
However, I need to help my mother upgrade her phone. She has been using a Samsung Galaxy S6 for a long time, probably 8 years now, and she uses an iPad Air 1st gen at home, as well as a Surface Pro 3. She is not particularly tech savvy, and her phone really is just non-functional now.
What iPhone do I get her? Money no object, is the pro max actually better than regular pro for a 69yo woman? What about the non-pros? I am leaf, so we don't have the annual upgrade program thing available, otherwise I would have bought it for her on that program so she could update to the probably better more mature 16 next September instead of buying the half-baked 15 right now.

I'm on iPhone 15 pm after 15 years of android

The ui is smooth and responsive, there's better privacy and anti tracking, it has Adblock available for safari, and the build quality far better than anything I've used on android. Also it's more women/social media friendly (matters when you're not an incel)

A few points I want to address
You can sideload in a shitty way with AltStore/dev acc but it's much worse than android.
You+ lets you watch and download YouTube ad free with sponsor block, but there is no PiP so it's worse than Vanced/newpipe. You can also use yt-dlp if you want.
The file manager is good enough and has smb support
The apps seem to be better on iOS in terms of polish and feel, I think companies put more effort into their iOS apps

    The things that are worse:
Background apps/multitasking is garbage. It really only lets you play music/video or run a vpn.
VLC for iOS is worse than androids. You can't just add a arbitrary srt file to a video, it has to have the same file name as the video. It also can't do PiP.
Notifications are better on android. Grouping and swiping away works much better
    Consistent back button on android
Conventional file system on android, iOS has this annoying sandbox approach which requires manually moving files around

Overall I think iOS is fine replacement for android. I'll reconsider in 2 years but im going to stay on iPhone for the life of this phone.

VLC 100% does have PiP. Anyways consider using outplayer, it’s an mpv fork

Which button does PiP on VLC?

Anyway thanks for the outplayer tip, PiP works and it looks like you can import srt files which is perfect t for my use case

iPhones are fine and all, but if you've been on Android forever, you're going to immediately feel confined because you can't customize everything to your specific feel. The worst thing I think is that you can't use a custom launcher, and have to use stock iOS ui

      Anonymous

I dunno man, I've been on custom android forever but recently switched to iPhone. Having something that just works out of the box I don't have to think about is nice.

Maybe I'm getting too old for this hobby.

you don't have to custooom to feel restricted
you just can't use basic things because apple
like changing volume for different things, or sticking a usb and use files from it, or transfer something to friends or to a computer without needing a freakin shitty mac

UX also becomes inexplicably bad whenever apple profits from it, somehow you know.

styling and customization are just a tiny plus compared to usability hindrances

You don’t need iTunes to transfer files and stuff to and fro your pc and your iPhone.
            1. If you’re on Linux, Linux has native support to mount iPhones, even mint ships with it. The package is called ifuse

            2. If you’re on windows, you have bigger problems than your iPhones limitations. Anyways, on windows you can just use sftp or syncthing to transfer shit, I can transfer like 500gb instantly using syncthing
