Deranged, yes, but that's not why I dislike it. Deranged in literature can be good if it's a good sort of deranged.

I dislike it because Esther is selfish and destructive and the book simply doesn't acknowledge that. It's not a matter of it being first-person. Perhaps it's just because of what we know of SP herself, but it's unpleasantly self-serving. It's a psychological do-it-yourself manual for toxic female narcisissm.

This. I couldn't get over her complaining while being in a wealthy family with a good chance of marrying a doctor to then still be rich and college educated. All she had to do was the laundry and raise a kid. I guess that would be boring. How dreadful lol.
Everything was accounted for. She would live a cozy rich life where she could read whatever she wanted in her spare time. She would probably havethe time to write a book of her own. And we are supposed to feel sorry for her?

          So what's the point?

          >money doesn't buy happiness
          >mental illness can happen to anyone at any time so leave your prejudices at the door
          >not understanding James Joyce is legitimate grounds for a mental breakdown(if you're a woman)

Well yeah, having things doesnt make people happy. I am not sure why you would even make the argument that she should be happy cause she's wealthy or can get married.

            That is how npcs think.

Almost every married man I know is not happy or comes across as some sort of dishevelled “half man” that’s incredibly meek.

Kek this OP reminds me of that OP who tried reading this because he saw it on his oneitis’s bookshelf and then went on some cringey diatribe about he really is starting to understand now.

idk anons, as an early 20s man myself i could relate to some of Esther's thoughts. Especially the realization that she had not experienced anything in life writing about. That sort of thing aged well if you talk to any young person

She deserved it + I'm glad Ted Hughes burned that journal. He's the better poet anyways.
