they were pretty good for a while, up to around the millennium

rank beginners could have linux installed for them, and if you had weird hardware or other things like that causing problems you'd have people around who could help. 'learning to code' in those days involved buying a book and having a fat guy at the LUG get a makefile set up for you, and there were lots of small projects going around you could make a useful contribution to.

they were also full of people who just liked computers, so there would always be someone with a very weird machine running IRIX or BeOS or something that you could play with

      however

you could still smoke indoors back then. zoomers cannot imagine how awful the combination of autists and gay smoke is. the acrid twang of BO overlaid with a deathly pall of gay smoke

When I was ~13 or so I remember thinking people are insufferable I can't wait for the day to be able to do everything online.

Well now I can definitively say being able to do everything online, never needing to step outside is actually just a way worse 'solution' to that issue.

The funny (and sad) thing is people like are the biggest supporters of isolation without even realizing it while they've spent decades bullying and shaming those that don't take their bullshit.

Yes what a dirty disgusting schizo you are for wanting to be among likeminded people, you should be ashamed of yourself for fricking with computers for hours, you should do what decent moral well adjusted people do like watch sweaty men touching each other on a podium or kick each other in the face with a ball while you scream their name, or wait nevermind, do normalgays do that anymore? Oh right they just watch underage girls doing softcore on tiktok for 10 hours a day on their pocket surveillance device while screaming about how much of a loser nerd you are, but we need to make everything require a smartphone app for convenience, we need to lock down harder to save even just one life!

Normbots hating on these things is good tho. Stop trying to normalize it. Normbots ruined most of the internet and gaming already.

    >to install Linux on each others computers
They did more than that, anon. They fix bugs and help solve problems; some even inspired new software to be made.

lol, no, laptops were way more expensive for way less hardware compared to a desktop, nobody used a laptop for things like games back then
yes, i did bring my whole desktop to places quite often, there was no other option

LUGs are basically just drinking clubs, like most clubs men attend. It’s just an excuse to get out of the house, have some drinks with your mates, and frick around doing something you find interesting.

what are you on about OP? it had nothing to do with grown men installing linux on each others computers". its a reason to get together and be social and bullshit about geeky stuff. just like amiga user groups, and warez meets, and whatever. it was all about normally antisocial people getting together with others and being social around a shared interest.

These user groups still around, though many of them are dominated by boomers. They kinda lost touch with todays Linux users, they obsess about "muh NSA is spying on muh Windows", they are scared of systemd, they generally are not very fun to be around. At least that is my experience.

A stranger installing Linux on my computer? That sounds as bad as blindly installing requirements, that sounds icky.
