I’m actually typing this on an almost decade old ipad pro and despite hating apple, this thing still works great surprisingly. I bought an android tablet that was 6 years newer than this one and (a galaxy tab active 3) and couldn’t believe it somehow felt slower than the ipad.

so it's worth it to just buy an iPad if I want to get into drawing? I'm thinking if I give up on it after a year an iPad will at least have some alternative use compared to a drawing tablet

one thousand times over, no. get a sketchbook and a pencil and just use that instead, then try digital if you really enjoy the process of drawing. i can not tell you how many times i've seen the cycle of quirky white girls thinking they can be artists and they give up immediately because they realize how much effort needs to go into it. alternatively, they go to art school and their connections carry them despite lacking skill and inspiration.

            >but I don't trust them to keep existing and not get censored/nerfed
Why would it matter? SD runs locally, so you might skip on future developments but will never lose what you can get now. Besides, even if the base gets nerfed, you're not the only degenerate out there, so there will be always stuff trained on all sorts of porn. The genie is out of the bottle for AI drawings.

            Anonymous

AI can't get specific enough for my tastes, and I figure being able to make changes to the things it generates will be useful. Maybe I'll use it to generate a base and then alter it until it's what I want but I don't want to be limited to adding brackets around prompts.

Base iPad with pen is like 450 bucks and would still do the job. Also digital drawing is very different from analog, so maybe anon would enjoy one and not the other. It's also much easier to learn since errors get punished less and the much more comfortable tracing.

I was thinking of buying the cheapest 12.9" version, no point in buying some tiny thing and making the experience unpleasant just to save 1k
I also thought the undo would help make things faster and you can store and backup digital art and produce variations of it easily unlike paper

            Anonymous

            >I also thought the undo would help make things faster
Yeah, that's what I meant with less punishment for errors. The ability to zoom in/out is quite lovely too and of course all the help you get when it comes to line-work.
            >I was thinking of buying the cheapest 12.9" version
Not a bad plan, and drawing itself isn't too resource intensive so you could get away with an used 2018 Pro too. Though newer models will make the generating an AI base part more pleasant if you're going to do it on device.

Sure, provided you actually draw. And again, you have to buy the Apple Pencil. Don't think some cheap junk chinese imitation pencil will work well.
The iPad has an application called Procreate which is specifically optimized for iPadOS and provides an extremely efficient, fluid drawing workflow that you can't really get on the desktop. This is one of the main ways iPads stand out compare to a PC drawing workstation.

If you get an iPad, don't bother buying brand new from Apple, get a used 5th gen with the M1 processor, or a 4th gen if you want to spend less.

one thousand times over, no. get a sketchbook and a pencil and just use that instead, then try digital if you really enjoy the process of drawing. i can not tell you how many times i've seen the cycle of quirky white girls thinking they can be artists and they give up immediately because they realize how much effort needs to go into it. alternatively, they go to art school and their connections carry them despite lacking skill and inspiration.

All this stuff goes without saying. Of course you shouldn't spend thousands of dollars if you're only just getting into a hobby, but if you find yourself at a stage where you want a digital tablet, an iPad Pro 12.9" 5th gen on ebay for $550 is one of the best options.

Wacom is actually worse value for money than Apple in this scenario, and your other alternatives are chinese junk like Huion.

If the compiler runs fine on the host machine, why should it matter whether it could also run on the iPad? If the host machine is of a different architecture, should the terminal emulator bring with it a cross-compile toolchain for that architecture? What would be the benefit of all of this complexity?

I genuinely do not understand the market for a tablet. Every instance ive been prompted to use one, a laptop felt like it would be a better substitute or a phone would suffice if youre just signing something. I dont think ive ever actually felt comfortable holding one. Its the very essense of "we made this to introduce you to problems youve never complained about before"

fair enough. i could see that being really useful for artists/creative jobs. When i first thought about it, that way before posting i was in the mind of just having a dedicated drawing pad on a desktop. If you dont have/need a desktop then thats probably perfect.

          Anonymous

          >a dedicated drawing pad on a desktop
One obvious downside for me would be being stuck to one place. If anything, there is a lovely synergy with a desktop since you can stream movies/vidya from it to your tablet and handle things it can't do remotely.

            Anonymous

Yeah, that was more the point of me including it there. As soon as you said laptop with a screen you can draw on, it clicked for me. I only know 2 artists well enough to know their setup and for work they use a pad and their recreation is just pencil and paper. Outside of that, im still not entirely sure though. Seems like a very fragile and awkward piece of equipment to have in a workplace environment. I know the cases exist and whatnot but still.

At least from my experience, it looks a lot more fragile than it actually is … my sis is a total monster when it comes to killing tech (she somehow murdered two laptop keyboards, and killed another laptop with cola, obviously has a few phones with cracked screen, etc) BUT I gifted her my iPad Pro back in 2018 since I found it useless without the keyboard, and she uses it a lot for watching yt and taking notes/studying, and it still looks like it's new. And it's not like she particularly takes care of it either … saw it lying on the floor more times than I'm comfortable with.

Convenience is king and you are a giga-moron contrarian, plus emasculated if you think iPad weight is too much. No normalgay thinks so and will gladly add a wireless keyboard for convenience if they find out about it.

But I just don't get the use case. It's just a smartphone with a bigger screen. If you add a keyboard then it's just a netbook. I get that the ipad is good for old people and toddlers to use because they can't figure a computer out. But other than that like what does it do? It runs IOS, just use your iphone or buy a macbook. If you want a tablet phone get a samsung fold.

It does way fewer things than a laptop would, but it does those things with slightly less friction and fuss. The big screen (as compared to a phone) is nice for video calls and light web use.
iPad fails as a replacement for an iPhone, Macbook, or anything else. As its own thing, it is nice. For my own use, it's not indispensable like a phone or laptop is, however. Perhaps rather than "just use your iphone or buy a macbook", do that too.

Surface has like twice the weight, twice the fatness while having half the performance at half the battery life. Sounds a lot more anti-consumer.

Sure. Buy two devices instead of one. I think one is more consumer friendly.
        Buy 10 iPads I don't care.
I was gifted an iPad in my life. I sold it.

Ideally you want two devices either way, a laptop/tablet just doesn't have the performance to replace a desktop. Some 550 bucks tower would be still faster than iPP and Surface together.

Sure but then iPad people are still advocating an additional device that costs money
            Desktop Plus laptop plus phone
Plus iPad, as of the other three didn't cover it

It's just spending more money because apple won't provide a 2 in 1 laptop option, a thing other companies provide as an option.

Most people don't need a desktop and a laptop. This isn't the early 2000s

I mean, kinda, most people would probably indeed be fine just with a laptop or tablet, and a normal laptop definitely increases the chances that some niche program would run for them. Was thinking more about IQfytards who have slightly more advanced usage that includes gayming and other shit that'd benefit from desktop-tier performance.

            >a thing other companies provide as an option
With tons of buts, that make it a suboptimal tablet and laptop. Something iPad with MacOS would easily surpass, so it gets a weird hatred for not being something it never claimed to be.

            Would surpass
But doesn't, because apple is anti consumer. Because they don't allow their own osx on their iPads which can clearly handle it specs wise.
Sorry I don't buy anti consumer tech

Gaming laptops are a thing. Beyond that I doubt the average user here does anything significant with their machine. And if they have a gaming laptop that has the specs for it. Most of the conversations here are pretty juvenile honestly

            >Gaming laptops are a thing
And just like Windows 2-1 tablets, they are a shitty compromise.

Fair but there are still plenty of AI generals and threads about some data hoarder who wants to transcode his anime/porn.

            >Comparing a gaming laptop to a tablet
I'm not comparing them with each other, just saying that both are crappy devices that are worst of both worlds.

Say, gaymer laptops are too heavy and noisy compared to a normal laptop but also too slow compared to a gaymer box while 2-1 tablets are - again - too heavy and noisy and lack the battery life compared to a real tablet while having a shit lap-ability as a laptop as well.
            >These are lonely people trying to build a digital life for themselves.
Regardless, they have hardware requirements beyond a gaymer laptop.

Get a developer license, then write a program that uses a ssh library
    Add simple frontend
Why can’t anyone develop here? It’s not like you’re going to put it on the store
It’s your own program for personal use

Also IIRC the iPad Pro actually has a decent music production workflow, especially if it's sample/loop based. Apple even released Logic Pro for the iPad.

A used iPad Pro 5th gen costs a lot less than one of those MPC things.

They did a while ago, though it's probably not even needed. Garageband is crazy powerful for free software.

You do get it though. It is a big iPhone, that’s the point. People make the mistake of assuming it’s just a small Mac. A fancier iPhone with a bigger screen. Good for consuming media and note taking or drawing.

It’s the luxury of luxury though. Something you buy when you already have their other products. It’s just too expensive and crippled to justify over a MacBook or an iPhone alone.

As long you have another computer, it's a much better option than the Macbook though.
