Every time I read this book I become horribly depressed, hopelessly nihilistic and actually feel physically sick.

Every time I read this book I become horribly depressed, hopelessly nihilistic and actually feel physically sick. Was that his intention? There is something brilliant but also completely revolting about this novel.

I have only read it once but I had the same experience.

It’s actually completely changed my brain. I read it in November and still haven’t recovered. Although maybe recovered isn’t the right word because I like what it did to me.

It made my sex drive go up but has made me nihilistic and enjoy less things in life but the things I still enjoy I enjoy them even more. It change my brain in terms of how I talk to people and I’m more bold and try to just be authentic and honest especially with women.

You homies are fricking moronic. Literally all you have to do is go outside and start making friends. Yes, for the most part, you will have to act as the glue that keeps these friend groups together at first, but it is a worthwhile endeavor. Look up local hobby groups for stuff you like and see if you can join them. Learn to tolerate or even enjoy the presence of people, even if you would normally react to them with rage and vitriol online. Functioning society is all about learning to get along with people you don't agree with or even like.

I have a gf, friends I like and a decent job. I still found the book had a deep effect on me.

I am not sure what your point is honestly.

Had opposite effect on me, it killed my sex drive. The sex scenes in the book were grotesque in my opinion and it showed just how pathetic and empty the modern obsession with "casual" sex is

I've only read one Hauellebecq, Serotonin, and it sucked. But he gets talked about a lot here. Anything else worth reading by him, maybe this book in the OP?
