Fedora to switch to KDE

The Fedora project plans to switch to KDE from GNOME as the default desktop environment. Claims GNOME is behind in terms of features and ease of use. The biggest problem is not whether they'll implement it, but rather how they will implement it, showing a clear determination. Thoughts? Feelings? Questions? Suicides in progress?

    >Thoughts?
Based. Hope the proposal is approved. Literally any actively maintained DE - including GTK ones like Xfce and Cinnamon - is a better choice than THE FOOT.

    >Feelings?
    Happy. Optimistic.

    >Questions?
As a maintainer of two packages in the default Fedora repositories, is there anything I can do to help?

    >Suicides in progress?
I imagine that Emmanuele Boipussy is seething right now. I hope s/he is the first one to go.

There should be a way to voice your approval, as a maintainer, your opinion might hold more weight, specially if you give a good reason.

Gnome has been trash since gnome3 was released. Fedora was one the first adopters. Shame it took them this long to wake up.

I don't care, i'm looking forward to Cosmic DE

      >The Fedora project plans to
A proposal is not a plan. A lot of people thinks that proposals made in Fedora have been approved already. I also blame the sensationalist YouTubers.
Once the proposal approves, then it becomes News.
      The discussion is here:
      https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/f42-change-proposal-fedora-plasma-workstation-system-wide/111343/14

Not likely it will be a full switch
~80% of fedora desktop users still use gnome based on telemetry data. it's trending downwards though.
What we'll most likely see is that kde version gets upgraded from "spin" and they officially support both options as "fedora workstation". Having both on the webpage will help increase kde visibility and adoption though.

This, however, I find it kind of weird that Fedora has promoted itself this way. They could offer all available DEs at download without having to look up for the Spins section, then you get the ISO, being the first option GNOME. There has to be a way of showing multiple DEs that isn't confusing on the non-technical users, Fedora just decided on showing Workstation with GNOME to avoid confusion.

Because IBM wants to sabotage the Linux desktop, so they push GNOME and only gnome in Fedora. See also: Microsoft and ~~*German government*~~ giving money to Gnome

Right, they're sabotaging the Linux desktop by making it usable. And Corporations giving money to open source projects is a completely new thing, imagine if multiple companies did that to various projects, or even worse, that companies made commits to such projects, like the Linux Kernel, or that a foundation made deals with corporations to promote open source projects that are convenient to them in exchange for donations, memberships and board seats on such foundation. Good thing the Linux Foundation doesn't do that shit. And all companies have people that are never enthusiastic about open source, they're all evil corpo rats that seeks to destroy anything related to open source.

Correct. Corporate israelites would never ever want to gradually seize control of an alternative OS gaining some popularity and make it into another Windows with AI Copilot and Transflag icons. They do everything right in 2024.

            >making it usable
GNOME is a disaster in design, it's radically different and lacking basic features every single user that has used a desktop in the last 25 years is accustomed to.
Why is the flagship Linux desktop being designed in such an unappealing and unconventional way that only appeals to a niche group of autists? Why do so many GNOME distros (Ubuntu, Pop_OS, Zorin, Elementary, Manjaro, Garuda, Nobara) have to include third-party extensions to bring it more in line with a traditional desktop experience?
Are they just moronic or is there malice behind it?

said, GNOME3 was created when everyone thought for an instance that tablets could be the future, then when everyone rapidly realized this was not the case, they doubled down and kept on acting like they weren't trying to make a tablet interface and that everyone should just use it on the desktop.

            >I want GNOME but not Wayland
GNOME is 100% focused on Wayland right now, just like KDE Plasma. In fact they're even removing X11 by default (it'll still be installable as a separate package for now but who knows how long that'll last).

            Try KDE Plasma 6.
The only apps I have this issue in are Qt apps that don't use the KDE libraries. Qt 6.7 supposedly has better support for light and dark stylesheets so we'll see how that plays out but KDE already fixed this with their KColorScheme library.

good, now deb + downstream should follow this, but only after KDE can stop being organizationally messy with their component release cycles. it has to be the only thing keeping it from being the king of DEs, gnome is just so fricking tacky and clunky by comparison.

Really doubt they will go for it, but if Plasma edition gets the Official Fedora statusTM it would be cool. Plasma does hurt from lack of adoption among the distros as *the* official DE, anything that pushes devs into developing Plasma 6 is always welcome. Valve is already working on it, having RH doing the same would be great for loonix desktop.

    >proposed by the same lot that tried to force Wayland -only for Plasma
Pretty telling that the majority of the proposal seems to be about evangelizing Wayland. How many of the benefits can even be chalked up to Plasma specifically instead of a change from GTK to Qt or X11 to Wayland? At least GNOME on Fedora went with the sensible route of just defaulting to Wayland and offering both it and X11 session out-of-box.

      >Would this change improve in some ways KDE in the long term? It'd be great if that's the case
Yes, I imagine so. If Fedora switched to KDE, KDE would receive the same backing GNOME did, not just from the Fedora project but Red Hat and IBM as well. I imagine features such as HDR, VRR and others might advance faster. Features the GNOME Project passed on for years in favor of keeping a more stable, but outdated desktop.

Gnome is the reason why linux is not more widely used. How do they expect people to develop applications if new GTK gets released every few months breaking old software. Now you have to deal with GTK 2, 3, 4, 5 and various minor versions that also break shit. GTK/Gnome devs should be tortured in a GNU/Dungeon for what they've done to the linux desktop.

      https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/f42-change-proposal-fedora-plasma-workstation-system-wide/111343/41

The main outcome will probably be the following:
      >Workstation remains GNOME focused
      >No extra support from Red Hat (nothing changes here)
      >An extra link is added on the fedora download page to point to KDE in a desperate attempt to look like they're remaining neutral

I am saying about blurry xwayland apps as well as rdp connections. And the stupidest thing is that xorg apps I want to use support scaling fine on xorg or kde wayland, but not on gnome - gnome snobs think that allowing each app to scale on their own is bad idea and it's better to render everything blury af.

I am not saying about non perfect fonts, I am saying about most obvious shit which works fine on kde, wlroots, xorg and even windows.

Personally I'm so far downstream that by the time this has any chance of affecting me, they will have done a u-turn on it. Basically, they can do whatever they want, I really don't care. Still on GNOME 3, still on X11, will stay that way for another 5 years if I can help it.

I’d be happy with that change if Plasma wasn’t a buggy mess. Make it work. Reduce the bloat. Make it feel like a complete and cohesive experience. Then switch.
Gnome and Plasma are on a completely different level when it comes to polish.

      Anonymous

It's already good enough and you could just easily say the same about GNOME and some of their buggy and experimental features (which are stable in KDE and have been for sometime). None of that stops GNOME from being used in Workstation.

If anything there is an argument that if KDE were somehow to become the default (which it won't. 100% the Workstation Group will shoot this proposal dead) it would get more help from Red Hat and would become even more complete and cohesive than it already is.
