It is the perfect format for standard document management which includes stuff like versioning, encryption and scripting.

Sumatra PDF on windows and zathura on Mac and linux. It takes a minute to find an acrobat alternative that is 20 times faster

I agree Adobe Reader is crap. But I have been dealing with A LOT of pdfs for nearly 20 years now, but the fact is, Adobe Acrobat is THE standard. It's bloated and slow but it'll render everything right.

Alternatives might render 99.9% perfectly, Acrobat takes care of the 0.10% that won't, not to mention when you need to use a weird fricked up pdf with Scripting up the ass, then it's often the ONLY choice.

      Yes you do
And if you ever read the PDF specification you'd understand the OP. Spec has like 1000 pages of unnecessary complexity

I had the pleasure of briefly trying to understand the format.
Its promise of being wholly ASCII, the "carousel" object structure being a nifty idea, especially for an early 90s idea.
But then comes the first warning flag: That it's intended to be machine-readable over human-readable.
Then comes the xref at the end (not limited to one of those in a PDF file).
And then you crack one of these things open, even a basic plain-text "Hello World" file, and it's nothing but binary "object streams".
      And you despair.

For personal use, I use markdown where possible, HTML+CSS if I need more pizazz.

PDF is pretty much the best format for sharing documents.

Your documents will look the same across every PDF reader and device. You don't have to worry about your readers seeing missing fonts in your document that they don't have installed on their system or your document's design being interpreted differently by another reader.

Documents are meant to look exactly as the author intended.

It's a bad idea precisely because it DOESN'T do this. Embedded fonts are optional in PDFs.

If you compile them with [gt]roff and view them in zathura, PDFs are actually a neat format.

what I hate most is that boomers will send JPG images as PDF for some insane reason
Plus I hate it when a restaurant has an online-only menu and it's a fricking PDF on my phone, because they can't into a responsive website
