      >wtf comrades!?
ok ok fine but think about this

      >industrial X application costs $19.99
      >create application to mimic X
      >inferior "product" and a GreatValue version of it, but somewhat functional
      >invite other professionals to chime in with code every now and then
      >potentially get people personally invested into project
      it doesn't seem unreasonable.

You dont have neither the skills nor the time nor the interest.
Look for example Zbrush, its still unparalleled and has a monopoly on good 3d sculpting yet it was done by a single guy in x86 assembler(not x86_64), you need to have a passion for what you're doing and its natural to want to be rewarded if its truly an outstanding product, thinking otherwise is literally evil and the product of the talentless.

We already have Ubuntu, which does a pretty good job of filling the same sort of "OS for idiots" niche that Windows is in. If you want Windows program compatibility, we have Wine, Proton, Mono and ReactOS.

But why would I want to rewrite existing software. Whoever wrote it got paid for it. I'm not self-cucking with free work.

if the software owner can sue you, you will be sued. If they cannot sue you, it was open source regardless of license.

This is how GNU got started. They took UNIX userspace and rewrote parts until basically nothing original remained and then started to expand on it. Yes, GNU used EEE to kill UNIX. If it's CLI based you have a good chance of making it work, if it's GUI based you have a very big hill to climb. If there's some patents or IP guarding their palace, good fricking luck.

    technically it could work.
Realistically, do you have the workhours and funds ready to rewrite said software from almost zero?

One thing to build software and another thing entirely to maintain it. In the FOSS space you'll probably have to update regularly to support the newest library versions and shit.
