I saw a documentary about them once. It's on youtube.

The rank and file is comprised of rejects of other nations militaries. Junkies, drunks, dipshits, people on the run etc. It's the last resort of last resorts. It's right next to suicide. It seems like a truly miserable existence. Even the French themselves look down on you, they don't see you as one of them or as a soldier, just a frickup.

It’s the last second chance you can grasp at. Although I suppose you could be cannon fodder in Ukraine for about the same.

Do you like France and want citizenship?

Can’t you just be a brownoid rapist and get that automatically?

        >tfw you will never be a 19th century Armée d’Afrique era Legionnaire utterly gutting Paris of leftoid froggy scum in between the usual business of brutalising the Algerians
        VGH

Why is it always down to brown chads to slaughter leftist chimps?

19th century Foreign Legion was pretty much entirely European. You didn’t start getting huge amounts of browns in it until the Cold War.

Bs, it's tough but not horrible. The french and the army love the FFL. Also they are considered regular soldiers and use the same equipment.

The French like the Legion on Bastille day and when they live far away from their bases. The ones in Aubagne and cities like that hate them.

Every garrison town hates the local soldiers no matter what division they are. Armies have been infamous for rape, petty crime, jarheads, etc. since the days of the Roman Empire

Absolutly wrong, the Légion is extremely popular here in France. Also it's not a made up of junkies and drunks, it's an elite group.

There's a memoir about called "A mouth full of rocks" by a British squaddy who joined in the 80s.
    Worth a read.
He was a Foreign Legion Paratrooper for about 3 years then he deserted.
Pretty brutal experience if what he wrote was true.
But that was like 40 years ago

They didn’t hold them off, they ran out of ammo and were forced to commit a suicide attack bayonet charge. The Mexicans were so impressed by their display of gigantic titanium balls they negotiated with them that they would surrenderbut get to keep their gear and their commander could get medical attention to save his life. The Mexicans captured all 17 survivors and traded them for Mexican prisoners like a month later.

I find it kind of wild that they saw hundreds of their dudes got slaughtered and didn't like, feel the need to get revenge. Is this some kind of third worlder mentality I can't understand? IIRC the chinese in korea sometimes operated the same way

You can't join online, you need to actually go over to France. Speaking French doesn't matter but they will tell you instructions in French. Once you're trained you're given a new identity and your birthday is now listed as 10 days later to your previous one

Speaking French, officially, does not matter. But if they have to make a decision the ideal candidate is someone who both has previous military experience and at least some command of French. Someone with neither is going to be top of the list for rejection.
