I'm not a professional welder, but I own MIG/TIG/Stick/Oxy-acetlyene welding rigs and all the related tools and a little lung damage too.

Welders aren't going anywhere before humans are themselves completely replaceable with androids, basically after whatever singularity is oncoming. The amount of work and skill it takes to take a random piece of pipe and make say the handrail in a stairwell is just unbelievable. Even in pipeline welding, where you must have xray quality welds and the cost of leaks is high; there is a man laying in freezing muddy ice water at the bottom of a ditch holding a sacrificial stick electrode spraying molten steel into a beveled groove probably manually made or at least touched up with an angle grinder. That dude is not being paid minimum wage either.

There's enough jobs, the issue is shipping in millions of pajeets and spics. The former will scam their way into tech jobs whilst the latter will willingly work for a fraction of the pay. They're both "hard working" but are a net negative. Indians are lazy, cut corners shamelessly and eventually cripple the company they work for with bad code that causes planes to fall apart. Mexicans will build shitty homes that fall apart before they're even sold which fricks the housing market even more. Both provide short term benefits to their respective employers but the higher order effects are disastrous.
BTW these unemployed CS majors are just low IQ or shit at coding. Companies are hiring, they're just not handing out 6 figure starting salaries like candy anymore

hiring for SE has become a lot harder as you need to filter through more shitters. It used to be a lot easier to filter shitters in interviews, but with co-pilot and ChatGPT giving basic exercises is useless so need to do more in depth design exercises
I didn't used to understand why google does such moronic interviews but now I get it. They just want to filter out shitters and this is the easiest way for them to do it. If someone is smart enough to read a bit and practice for their interview, he is more likely to be competent

The whole point of universities from the start was to be a place where rich kids could learn some perspective without having to actually touch grass. The concept of post-secondary education as an institution where middle class people go to pay tens of thousands of dollars to get a piece of paper that's effectively just a permission slip to work is a fricking abomination. "Useful" things should be taught by industry, either in union-supported trade schools or on the job. Academia is too far removed from the actual work so it's impossible to learn how to do a job in a university.

        Anonymous

The sad thing is that the abundance of these degrees is driving drown the quality of education not only in post secondary education but secondary education as well. Who cares if you can't do algebra if colleges are willing to teach it to students are willing to pay. Ubiquitous action is simultaneously driving down the quality of education while also increasing the price of it.

When universities first arose they were almost exclusively for upper-class people to get elaborate education on mostly theoretical (or to put it more cynically, "useless") liberal arts topics, not practical engineering and the like. The idea of the university as a place you go after high school to make you more suitable for a career is pretty much exclusively a post-GI Bill invention.

Now philosophy graduates are being hired at gayMAN+, you know, including AI companies, such as Mistral and OpenAI, because someone always has to remind programmers about ethics of AI, epistemology, and philosophy of mind.
Philosophy graduates on average earn more than all other non-STEM majors, I guess their skills are quite valuable in real life.

In an idiom characteristic of contemporary socio-political discourse, one might articulately profess a profound affective affinity towards the prevailing corporatocratic entities, which, through their hierarchical and bureaucratic dominion, exert a form of omnipotent oversight and regulatory governance over the individual's existential and vocational spheres.

            >So they appeal to you because you're a megalomaniac?
Intriguingly, your query posits a psychological paradigm wherein my expressed approbation for the aforementioned corporatocratic hegemony could ostensibly be interpreted as a manifestation of my own grandiose self-perception, characterized by megalomania – a disposition inclined towards power and dominance, reflective of an inflated sense of self-importance and an overarching desire for control and authority within the socio-political matrix.

            he works as a linguist
            works as a dictionary
Your observation wittily insinuates a dichotomy between the professional identity I profess – that of a linguistic specialist, ostensibly engaged in the systematic study of language structure and function – and the operational modality you perceive, akin to that of a lexical compendium, wherein my responses seemingly embody the characteristics of a repository of words and their meanings, rather than the analytical or interpretive endeavors typically associated with the field of linguistics. This juxtaposition subtly critiques the apparent discrepancy between the theoretical expertise implied by the linguist's role and the practical execution thereof, as perceived in my discursive contributions.

            Anonymous

Your articulation, while steeped in the rich tapestry of linguistic scholarship, inadvertently casts a spotlight on the inherent paradox that shadows this profession. The role of the linguistic specialist, as you eloquently describe, ostensibly aims to bridge the chasm between the abstract understanding of language and its practical manifestation in human discourse. Yet, this portrayal, for all its intellectual allure, subtly underscores a lingering skepticism: does the linguist, in their meticulous dissection of language's structure and function, truly succeed in transcending the confines of theoretical exploration to impact the living, breathing world of communication? This reflection is not born of a disdain for the academic endeavor but rather emerges from a contemplation of its palpable influence on the quotidien dialogue that weaves the fabric of society. The question lingers – is the linguist's contribution, with its formidable lexicon and analytical prowess, ultimately confined to the realm of academic discourse, a Sisyphean endeavor in the pursuit of relevance amidst the ever-evolving tapestry of human interaction?

Pretty much this. The upper-class perspective (consciously or otherwise) is that the lower classes have no need to learn about the arts when they will serve no purpose beyond making shoes for 40 years and then dying.

          That's exactly what it is.
Not only that, but theater classes in childhood solve the potential for social altism in any human being. The humanities are the true frontiers of education that make any individual develop in all aspects of life.
I only touched a computer at school when I was 16. I made models when I was 6, free themes, project-oriented lessons.
It's a completely different world from a canned education to train technical labor.

tech is everywhere, right? As long as it keeps growing and evolving, computer science will stay super important. Think about stuff like AI, virtual reality, and all the cool gadgets we use every day—they all rely on computer science. Computer science isn't just for nerds in hoodies coding in basements (although that can be fun too!). It's everywhere, from social media to healthcare to fashion. Basically, if you wanna make a difference in almost any field, knowing computer science is a huge plus.

One thing I've learned is that computer science teaches you awesome problem-solving skills. And let's be real, life's full of problems, so having those skills is seriously handy, whether you're fixing a bug in your code or figuring out how to organize your closet.
So yeah, computer science is totally here to stay, and I'm pumped to see where it takes us next.

      >As long as it keeps growing and evolving
This is no longer the case. No, LLMs are not new. No, Applel goggles are not new either. Moore's Law is dead, and has been so for 10+ years. There will be no AGI and no ASI within our lifetime. And given current demographic trends, we're likely in for technological stagnation or even recession for decades. The fewer people there are and the less intelligent they become, the worse this tech "winter" will be. Ever heard of the the Bronze Age collapse, the Dark Ages after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, or the industrial and cultural decline of Kyivan Rus' after the Mongol invasion? The same thing will happen to us, even without a major war or ecological catastrophe.
      >computer science teaches you awesome problem-solving skills
Math does it. Not CS. CS teaches you how to use your computer to solve problems efficiently, not how to solve them yourself. Most CS graduates are less intelligent and more ignorant than gender studies graduates. Anything beyond computers and technology is unknown territory for most of them, hence the ridiculous and often extremist political and economic views (either far-right or far-left), lack of social awareness and no understanding of how the world outside their cubicle works.

        >Moore's Law is dead, and has been so for 10+ years. There will be no AGI and no ASI within our lifetime.

I strongly disagree with the first point - the only way that comment makes any sense is if you only view moores law through the lens of single core performance. Imho the gpu style of compute as implemented in dpc++ is the absolute way forward. Memory bandwidth and aggregate compute horsepower keeps rising. But even single core performance is likely to get a big bump with microarchtectural advancements like rentable units.

I am pretty sure the comment about AGI is wrong too (we will have to see); but I do think the current approach of deep learning LLM's is an expensive dead end.

College is a fricking scam. Used to be you actually learned something at such places that would be of use to you career wise. Now? Frick no. Now its maybe 20% actually useful with the rest utter bullshit. But you gotta take (pay) for the bullshit in order to get the good bits. Also due to colleges being more or less a "ho hum, oh you went, so did I" thing now (you know no one gives a shit) the advantage of even going is zero. So you got your fancy degree along with a big debt bag round your neck which won't get paid off till your 40s. Good job champ!. Take a look around; your life is now on the path of fricked with no off ramp. Why? Well if paying off all your debt was "easy" why are many fricks working say two jobs then? Cause life has a way of tossing many debt bags on you at once. Wouldn't you like one less bag of debt? Sure you would.

This is would normally be a /misc/ link, but it is relevant to this thread. It has some discussion about what college is now vs what it once was -> a filter for intelligence. Imho all that people are going to do in breaking down 'barriers' and erasing markers for competence, intelligence, skills, and even physical and mental health is basically just going to be the creation of new social systems and tools that perform the same task. All this will be happening as we collectively ride the short bus into a possible AI and technological singularity. Never think you are living in dull times.

      >over the past 80 years, as a far greater proportion of North Americans attended college, the average IQ of college undergraduates dropped from around 120 to 102, just slightly above the average of 100.
The average is not 100 anymore, it's now around ~97 in the US, and it's dropping rapidly, just like everywhere else in the West. No, not just because of migrants, it's dropping even among the native populations.
There was an article that argued that Victorians were much more intelligent than modern humans, or at least had more intellectual capacity/potential than we do: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0160289613000470

Its the lifestyle that we have given ourselves - now being extended culturally. We are now all special snowflakes entitled to a magical existence and to be affirmed as magical snowflakes in every interaction. Take that approach from childhood through early adulthood and you get a population of abject morons. Maybe add the lethargic lifestyle and trash diet as an extra pull downward too.

When you have to think and work to survive - that clearly has positive effects.

Wanting for the population to be smart is left wing. Unless you're one in a position of power. Then you want to be smart yourself, but the population at large to be dumb. Dumb people are easier to control. Too bad it leads to the decline of the society as a whole. But hey, as long as you're rich yourself, right?

IQ started with the mean being set to the mean of Brits. It in fact got shifted a few times I think, I remember asking the same question several times.
At best, the current mean is 100 for the British population several years ago. It doesn't apply to other countries.

I looked at this again, and eg. WAIS-IV was standardized based on American population in 2008. It's perfectly possible for the mean to be 97 on that scale today.
WAIS-III was standardized based on America in 1997.
There are other standards, but I don't care enough to look for more iq test trivia.

Not even ~2 billion East Asians with their 100+ IQs would be able to raise the global average to 100, given that most countries are in the 80-90 range. 100 is not even the average for white Europeans anymore, only Belarusians, Finns, Lichtensteins and Germans have it in the three-digit range.

I got into an Ivy Plus CS career through a scholarship after getting a Fields medal (this being like a decade+ ago) and dropped out after the first year when I saw how absolutely Black personlicious the methodology there was. They didn't even have lambda calculus in their curriculum and their SICP course, which was what made me quit, was more like daycare for yellow bugs and women. After being threatened out of the scholarship I went into philosophy to similar results, here the issue being that all these schmuck-frick NYT best-selling academics scoffed at continental philosophy and everything it represents even though they have no answer to Godel (they cling desperately onto their model and any implicit breakage is covered with silence and gaslighting). I almost thought of going into economics since that's a field I knew little of but I clearly wasn't going to be a culture fit there either and a lot of the field suffers ironically from the opposite and being more than anything a pseudoscience. So I decided to waste my time.
The frick am I going to get a degree for? Money? I don't give a shit about money. I'm not running after some dead-ass corpo's money and selling my soul in the process, pretending what matters is to ride the Black personcattle-brain-washing-to-corp-ass-fricking dick carousel or like that's the only way to make money. Even bombing Microshit's HQ is a more worthwhile investment of your time. Yes, it's too late. Your brain has already peaked at 20, it's almost impossible to learn new skills at 24, your brain is no longer as neuroplastic as it was just a few years ago.
      >I'll get my degree at 28-29. if I get my degree will I get payed like others my age or get payed like a stupid 18yr old?
      >payed
You will get "payed" even less than a "stupid 18yr old" because employers won't be thrilled to hire you and you'll have to scale back your salary expectations, because a 30-year-old boomer with no work experience in the field is always a bad sign in the eyes of employers.
      >and should I go to college if I HATE 18yr olds?
No, you shouldn't, really. It will be difficult for you to survive among them (socially) and concentrate on your studies. And despite what people say, STEM degrees require more soft skills than most liberal arts/humanities degrees.

I was horrendously sleep deprived in school and my memory got shot from what it was before. The damage is irreversible. Since I finished education sleep deprivation is extremely rare. I drink basically zero.

            >Nobody except them would notice if all philosophers and linguists were fired tomorrow.
Yep, and in a few decades your entire society will collapse for no reason at all.
You probably also think architects are crooks because they basically work for the government and "extract money" from people's taxes, so they could be easily fired and nothing bad would happen.

Philosophy was worth something when it was a synonym for natural science (eg. Newton would say he's a philosopher). Today all that remains is a scam, because everything worthwhile was relegated to its own field.
Linguists are obsolete in a much simpler technical meaning, it's the equivalent of Hilbert's program but for language. We now know it doesn't and can't work because languages aren't rational constructs, rules aren't rules, just dominant structures. The only attempt that actually works is a mass statistical one because that's what language is: it's not a set of rules, it's purely associative. That's why it's possible to write completely ungrammatical sentences with clear meaning, something that disproves the whole field.

            >philosophy tells us how we should live and what is right and wrong.
Not exactly, it doesn't actually tell us how we should live our lives and what is right and wrong, it teaches us (both as individuals and as a society) to think and define these things for ourselves. And that's just what ethics mainly does, there are many other areas and branches such as logic, metaphysics, epistemology, phenomenology, philosophy of science, philosophy of religion, etc. But the StEmBrOs of IQfy (and IQfy sometimes, though less often, that board is a bit more intelligent, or at least it used to be before polcels started raiding it 24/7) think that just because they don't need to read Kant or Russell to know how to bubble sort or how to solve differential equations means that philosophy is useless and "just a hobby, lol". Fundamental questions like the hard problem of consciousness or the mind-body problem or the trolley problem? Who cares, lmao, I have le STEM degree, I am le smart, philosophy is for dumb gays.

It's not even so much that philosophy answers these questions; it's that it encompasses reflection on these questions. When golems tell you that philosophy is worthless and obsolete, or encourage people to ignore the subject in favor of something "useful", like how to be a better cog for industrial society, you shouldn't treat it as a prescription to be discussed, but as a given state of affairs for a certain growing class of "people". As you say, humans cannot live without philosophy, and yet these creatures are live and they are without philosophy, so what does that imply?

Yeah, or just something close enough to it. In the end, people just do whatever is in their nature, and then rationalize why it's needed. Golems don't have it in their nature to reflect on the human condition, so they don't understand why reflection is "needed".

Niels Bohr's quotes are the most bizarre one, because he wonders about nature of reality, something you said we need 'philosophers' for. But he isn't. In fact those two quotes show two things at once: you actually need to have background in hard sciences to be able to even ask real questions, and second, being a 'philosopher' is not a job. It's a hobby, which Niels Bohr is engaging in.
That image macro makes the opposite argument of what you incorrectly read it as, and what the author intended it to.

Ok. That's about the level of "technology" humans actually require. They still don't need STEM or the technological system to survive. They arguably don't need them to thrive and be content, either. Does it help you case any?

Current people definitely need technology, and more importantly, people with technology can easily kill those without. Therefore it will be always needed in practice.

No, you 'monitor defects' if you sit at the factory line and inspect parts yourself.

But what machines? Now a short description becomes an entire sentence "I configure, maintain and fix machines responsible for detecting parts that don't meet specifications". The whole meme was that you have to describe it in 3 words. It's incorrect.

Because when this pedo-KGBist was in his early 40s, neither he nor anyone else thought he will be the person who'll be able to end the lives of billions of people by pressing one button in his briefcase. Because no one argued about ethics in Russia in 1999, and now we're all on the verge of being wiped off the face of the Earth as a species.

            >Yeah, NATO choosing to escalate with Russia could lead to literal WW3.
NATO is not even at war with Putin's Russia yet, it is simply helping Ukraine to stop the aggressor and survive by sending some scraps from time to time. This can hardly be called escalation. Escalation happened on February 24, 2022, when this megalomaniac launched an unprovoked full-scale invasion, just as he threw innocent Alexei Navalny in jail, whom he recently killed.
            >But more important, what the frick does it have to do with the thread?
You were the one who argued that we don't need any more philosophers or ethicists. I gave you an argument why you are wrong, because without philosophers we will get more Putins who will kill millions of people simply because they have "cool technology", whether it be nuclear weapons, military AI, or an army of Terminators.

Because Putin is an irrational and deranged monkey with a grenade (or in his case, nuclear weapons) and can do unpredictable things like he did in 2008 in Georgia, or in 2014 in Crimea and Donbass, or in 2022 with this invasion. He has already used chemical weapons (the infamous "Novichok") against British citizens on British soil, so are you really sure he won't push the button during his next steroid psychosis moment?
            >I never argued this. Some other tard did, but even so, what the FRICK does that have to do with your Slava Ukraini nonsense?
This is a real example of what can happen if you fire all philosophers, as that anon suggested, because "philosophy is not needed". That's exactly what happened to Russia, first it expelled most of its philosophers in the 1920s (on the so-called "philosophers' steamers") and then the repression against philosophers has continued ever since and now there are no philosophers in Russia except that drug-addicted schizo Dugin, who is not even a real philosopher but a warmonger and a midwit. Do we want more irrational agents like Putin among global leaders? I don't.

            >This line of thinking, and the rest of your incoherent rambling, are actual examples of what happens when a person has no capacity for abstract thought and zero philosophical depth.
Philosophy was my minor in college, in my 2nd and 3rd year of college I read more philosophical treatises than actual textbooks in my major (Economics). Of course, that's still not enough to become fully versed in philosophy as a branch of science, but at least I understand why it's so important, much more than most people, and most likely more than you.

No, I recognize that people like Putin, who act without any ethical considerations, should not be put in positions of power or any technological or economic high places at all. This is why people like Musk or Altman bother me as well, although much less than that old balding maniac with a nuclear briefcase: while they are clearly not as genocidal and irrational as Putin and his kind, their disregard for the ethical side of AI and technology in general is kinda disturbing.

            >You call the stuff in Ukraine that is entirely limited to Novorossija region a "major war"?
There is no such thing as "Novorossija region", it's some kind of newspeak created by Putin and his gang of crooks, thieves and murderers. There are 4 partially occupied regions of Ukraine (5 if you count in a small part of Kharkov region) + fully occupied Crimea and Sevastopol, which are also Ukrainian regions. And yes, it's a major war, both armies have 450,000+ soldiers at the front right now.
            >When Spain set tanks and watercannons to Catalonia, nobody was crying.
Yes, sending a few watercannons to suppress a separatist movement (partially instigated by Russia btw) is the same as wiping out entire cities like Mariupol (500,000 people lived there before the full scale invasion, many of them fled there from occupied Donetsk in 2014-2015), Volnovakha, Bakhmut, Maryinka and Avdeevka.
I hope you're at least getting your 15 rubles per post and not doing it for free. The more money they spend on you and your kind, the less goes to the military, and that's a good thing, at least for now.

            >over this week's designated boogeyman and making references to whatever narrative is being peddled in this week's corporate news
Putin has been a thief, a crook and a murderer since at least the 1990s when he was Sobchak's aide and curated all illegal businesses there, from prostitution and tax evasion to cocaine shipments. He's not "this week's designated boogeyman", he's a criminal who has killed thousands of people since then. Btw, ICC issued an arrest warrant for him and Maria Lvova-Belova over their war crimes.

Putin is exactly as amoral as any Western political operators (calling them "leaders" is absurd; Biden as president is testament to the fact that the concept of a "leader" has been obsoleted in the West). The main difference is that Putin operates according to the old rule book of trying to keep a somewhat functioning society going to keep his power, meanwhile the deep state that rules over you believes that it can maximize its power by destroying the West and then rebuilding it into a next-gen dystopia.

Asia is most definitely not white, Japanese are honorary white because of other reasons, not because of their skin color. The native asians in russia are the complete opposite of Japanese, then we must also not forget the chechens, turks, the other mixed ethnicity islamic mutts.

My country IS Russia, homosexual, and you've obviously never been here, it's not white anymore, it hasn't been white since at least the 2000s. I go to a shop and all the cashiers are churkas, I go to a bus and all the drivers are churkas, I go to the metro and 50% of the passengers are churkas and 20% are khachi with beards and shaved moustaches. There are whole classrooms in schools now where there are 1-2 Russian kids and 20+ churkas. The only actual Russians I see these days are 70+ year old grandmas, but even they are dying out now.

there are few countries where the concept even makes sense, Japan, few others. At a minimum the country must be 95%+ monoethnic, otherwise who are you even defending? some random guys that just speak the same native language? Patriotism dies the moment mass immigration starts, Russia has mass immigration from Asia.

All other countries should be thought of as corporations providing state services (mostly security) in exchange for taxes. Most suck, some suck worse than others, every country has tradeoffs. Circumstances can change, when some country unexpectedly start to suck, you leave.

This. Same argument that people make about guns. Before guns it was possible for a tyrannical despot to hold on to power and force literally starving peasants to work for him for free, because an untrained peasant with a sword will NEVER defeat a well trained knight. Now with guns, this can never happen, because everyone can use a gun or learn very quickly how to.

And yet that doesn't stop people complaining about how they make us kill each other, implying being shot is worse than starving to death or having your head cut off with a sword. Yeah in absolute terms more people die by gun than sword, but that is because the feudal mortality is so bad that people have 10 children and 7-8 of them don't make it into adulthood

          >Your brain isn't even done at 20.

Past the age of 20 your ability to learn new things starts to slowly decline, and past 25 this decline accelerates. If you didn't learn new things for 5+ years after high school and instead fried your brain by playing video games, gooning, and shitposting on IQfy, the damage is irreparable.

          >Past the age of 20 your ability to learn new things starts to slowly decline

          I'm 34 and I didn't observe any mental decline since 20.
Yet I heard people say they did.
I think the actual causes are environmental: mostly alcohol and sleep deprivation.
I was horrendously sleep deprived in school and my memory got shot from what it was before. The damage is irreversible. Since I finished education sleep deprivation is extremely rare. I drink basically zero.

          >I was horrendously sleep deprived in school and my memory got shot from what it was before. The damage is irreversible

And if Ukraine immediately surrendered, there would also be no war. What's your point? The root cause of this is still US foreign policy, and US analysts have been warning against the relevant aspects of said policy long before you knew where Ukraine was on the map.

Frankly Western response is dissapointing, especially the EU, I understand they do not want to send troops however at this point Europe is basically at war and all they have to do is supply enough weapons, they don't even have to send troops to fight this war. If or when Ukraine loses, russia will attack European countries next (just like russia has done countless times in the past) and that will cost Europe 10 times more or even 100 times more than what it would have cost to send weapons to Ukraine.

I don't know what your psychotic babble is about. I'm just issuing a reminder that the US is responsible for this war from start to finish, and continues to perpetuate it. It will stop when the bloodthirsty israelites in Washington decide that Ukraine is destroyed enough for Blackrock to rebuild it into their model post-national state.

Us is not responsible for this. Russiana have invaded, have attacked, and have occupied Ukraine, russians are responsible not the US.

No, I will not fall for your computer science FUD posting.

I WILL graduate with a degree in computer science. and you WILL have to compete with me. And there is nothing you can do to stop me.

Are any of those degrees more useful? There's an argument to be made that morehard science degrees would be better, but I don't think less humanities degrees is a bad thing.
