You know you can make your git private right? Like... there is nothing from making all your stuff only accessible to you.

      private to who?
its based on their cloud servers right?
its like when mods read deleted messages

Then don't use github then? Who's forcing you to upload your projects there.

If your school/uni doesn't host their own git remote repo then they are moronic and you should drop out before they cause any real mental damage to you.

By this logic you should never trust anyone with anything. All software is open-source if you have enough low-level knowledge.

wait, isn't git made by github?

No, GitHub is for hosting the code, Git is the software to manage version control.
Git was created by Linus Torvalds, the same dude who created Linux.

        >private to who?
        >its based on their cloud servers right?
        >its like when mods read deleted messages

Yes, they 100 % do that. I suggest you to switch to true open source alternatives such as Forgejo by hosting it yourself or use the main public instance Codeberg.

Where are these moronic kids even coming from?

        newbies are always welcome 🙂

git is separate from github, you can use git privately on your own computer. Don't use github.

Not at all, and thank God for that. It was written by Linus Torvalds in 2005 as an alternative to SVN, and has since been developed by Mr. Junio C Hamano. It is well worth it to host Git yourself rather than rely on Github. You can still get scraped, but you can't get DMCAd or violate terms of service when its your own server.

It's really disappointing that Git = GitHub is the common perception. Microsoft must be starting fires from rubbing their hands.

Github was the worst thing to happen to GIT. More people use GIT now instead of the alternatives, but now all open source code is centralized onto one platform instead of decentralized. Github should never have become a viable option.

I've had it happen a few times where people reach out to me about a repo I'd published because they were working on something similar. After conversating with them and helping them / giving a few pointers about design issues, some of them had published their code. In one of them, I noticed the code is incredibly similar to mine, even retaining the same comments, with no attribution or even a thanks to me. They ride on my success privately, and it truly is like op said. Ive since then taken my repos to private, oss is mostly a meme unless you're being paid by some foundation to do it.

Well if you had a license that was open then they can do that provided they are abiding by the license, right? Even if it's just a copy. If that violates the license then you can report them for violating the acceptable use policies which prohibits infringing on your reserved rights.
