They had nothing to actually deliver, you dumb homosexual. 2 million tokens is a matter of hardware scaling which Google already had being in literally every country except China. Their AI improved in no meaningful way, and the emergency things they showed off today were all pre-generated and were not live demos because they couldn't fake that shit on such short notice.

People said the same thing last year
"Surely, Google will catch up since it has access to all of your data, it just needs to combine them and feed it to a model"
And yet we are still in the GPT4 dominance era. What do you actually use AI for besides coding and back-and-forth queries? Do you ever use it for things you would need to incorporate all of your GDrive data into? How often do people actually use chat-with-pdf type products? I would wager not that much for it to make even a dent in profitability for GOOG. I think of use cases where AI would help Googles products and I can only think of background situations - automated caption and sections in youtube videos, video understanding for better search in youtube, auto-generated youtube video feeds based on search and watch history. Those are features that would pull me more into apps I already use, more eyeball time means more ad money for them which is their revenue generator.
Now this whole presentation was about features I'd never fricking use. I don't take trips often enough for Maps AI to help me, nor do I ever use Google to auto-plan my itinerary when I do travel. The learning feature sounds kind of nice but again I don't download learning resources to my Google Drive, if they actually release the glasses it might take off though. I can barely remember half the shit they demo'd in this presentation. The video generator? Not for me. The music generator? Not for me. It felt like they were out of touch with the average user, as a consoomer they only need to integrate with youtube. I don't even give a shit about the Mail integrations.

          >How often do people actually use chat-with-pdf type products?
          adding to this point
opening a pdf in edge browser and clicking copilot is the path of least resistance that college students are using to extract info from pdfs, have pdfs explained to them, or straight up cheating on online exams
chatgpt itself os only better for essay help if you are uploading your entire paper & your sources as textfiles and pdfs to a customgpt and asking it to find more relevant quotes from sources or make the essay longer

kinda disproves your theory if that's all it did. maybe it's doing that and just storing the image as part of a context window, but even so it's more impressive than the demo by OAI yesterday. even more impressive is that it retained the context when the user switched to Google Glass.

if you were actually doing your job instead of shitposting during work hours, maybe your products wouldn't be so trash

Stock traders don't do anything based on a PR conference. All the necessary information is relayed in legally-defined and mandates documents and all the important information is rumour. Conferences are for hyping products and, well, I guess that didn't happen this time. But it has nothing to do with stocks.

Believe it or not, but finance guys couldn't give a shit less what consumer products Google puts out, because none of the value of GOOG/L comes from that stuff. After Google cancelling and fricking up products over and over and over, nobody takes I/O seriously anymore. They know that anything on this keynote will either be half-baked, cancelled in 6-12 months, or more useless "AI" shit nobody wanted in the first place, and for the few that do, it will never actually see the light of day in the form they present.

      Anonymous

It actually went up and spiked up to 2% before falling back down during showing Project Astra. Finance people don't really care as long as the people look like they are in the race as a viable competitor, and as with hyped concepts being monetized, they don't understand enough of it to stop throwing money at it when the power scaling laws for LLMs are not keeping pace.
Also, this highlights how important Deepmind is to Alphabet right now at the moment. If Hassabis and the rest of Deepmind didn't intervene in PaLM's development during MedPaLM and got Gemini running as soon as they did, Bard would've been still a thing and Google would've been in deep shit. I think there is a good chance he'll be the next CEO of Alphabet after Pichai leaves for one reason or another.

All this AI stuff just reminds me that Siri was doing actual useful kinda-AI stuff by voice command like 10 years ago. So much of this stuff is underperforming a literal local-mobile app.

The problem was that Apple let it languish and it lost capabilities because they can't maintain software worth a shit over there and squandered their lead. Steve Jobs surely saw it coming, and that was why he brought Siri.

And then positioned himself to look after successful Google products like Gmail and Android which put him in the hot seat for promotion. The only thing he can really get credit for is coming up with the idea for Google Drive and that isn't enough in my view for him to be CEO.

Why the frick are commenting on something you have no idea about? Gemini Nano has already been running on-device on Pixel 8 Pro phones since last December.
        https://blog.google/products/pixel/pixel-feature-drop-december-2023/
They only announced a wider rollout today to other Android devices today. They are actually the first mover here for local on-device AI from a commercial entity rolled out to normal people and yes, you were able to do this sooner using stuff like MLC-LLM but it requires technical expertise outside of any normie.

You mentioned chatbots, why the frick did you switch to Stable Diffusion? Don't move the fricking goalposts here. Google is first for local on-device chatbots and 2nd to multimodal and agents if you rank by public revelation.
But yes, if you want to "boast" about Apple, the story isn't better. Yes, they had NPUs first and got a faster onramp for developers to use it in limited ways sooner than on Android, https://github.com/ShiftHackZ/Stable-Diffusion-Android was done later than the app you linked so not contesting that. But Apple has fell behind on futher developments just like they had first mover advantage with Siri and squandered their opportunity with no one to blame but themselves. They wouldn't be groping blindly for a partnership with anyone that they could if this wasn't the case. OpenELM and whatever they'll do for ELM proper got predated and outperformed by Phi-3 and it is embarrassing.

How do you still do not grasp that we hit peak technology in the early 2010s and that all that's left is to try to grift as much money and squeeze as much value from cattle? There's nothing left to do with tech. The pajeets are just an expression of that. It all peaked.

I wish I had a timestamp but he went to one of those congressional hearings and randomly broke and went full pajeet with his voice. Almost sounded Arabic lmao. He kept trying to say "tech" but it sounded more like"durka durka" with the tightness and tongue rolling and everything.

so far the only google AI that's been genuinely been useful for me is the circle to search crap, and only because majority of phones apps just straight up don't allow copy/paste. the image search function has been pretty shoddy so far, and similar experience with the google search AI crap. realistically i think the issue with """AI""" powered search is that currently for people that are even somewhat tech savvy, manual search still gives much more accurate results with a bit more work, and there's not enough time savings with """AI search""" when it gives you crap results. it's probably similar to """full self driving""" in cars where if the AI is always gonna be stuck at 80% of human level, might as well just do it yourself.
