people use their phones more than their computers. i wouldn't be surprised if more people are slowly replacing their computers outright with their phones.
my wife has a laptop, but she rarely uses it. 90% of her screen time is on her phone. 10% on her laptop is when she wants a bigger screen.
the inconvenient truth is, the phone is simply more convenient.

I hear this argument often and simply can't understand it. Android is unusable for daily computing maybe outside of using maps and search on the go. The interface and keyboard are awful and hide every information away in order to infantilize their apps. How can people prefer that to a reasonably sized screen with keyboard and mouse?

  17. 2 weeks ago

google really doesn't know what it wants to do. it went the open source route and the alliance because it wanted to be like microsoft strat. put its software on as much hardware as it can.
but apple has been strictly closed source and doing exceptionally well. so now google wants to follow the apple strat. and guess what? its going to fail because google isn't apple. apple, is apple.

google needs to start being itself but i can see that as a problem because google itself, is simply an ad company that use to be a internet search provider company.

Yes, but for AOSP certain userspace programs are now third-party, and essential ones, at that. Of course, they can be compiled in or post-installed, that means tracking and vetting even more repos to build a basic ROM.

SoC's killed custom ROM's from day 1. Give me a phone with a bog standard x86_64 so I can load whatever-the-frick Linux distro I want that would have a Linus approved kernel module that talks to the baseband modem. If Linus flips the developer off even once the code goes down the shitter and starts over.

it's not the fact they use arm or soc's that are the issue when it comes to using one firmware on multiple phones
it's the lack of a standard firmware/platform like what pc's have that causes that
even the pc becoming a common standard was basically by accident, it was the simple nature of its' bios and the lack of any ibm-specific chips otherwise which allowed it to be easily cloned, and the popularity of the clones cemented it as the standard
nowadays things are so abstracted that very different hardware can run the same software, so there's no incentive to make standard hardware interfaces like there was back in the 80's/90's

      as a side note;
      a. there have been standard platforms made around arm, like the computers arm was originally made for, by acorn
      b. there are x86 soc's
      c. there have been non-pc x86 computers that won't run dos/windows due to platform differences

yes, making phones pc's is one solution, but just making them one platform is all you need, it doesn't have to be x86 or a pc, just the same as each other

    >my fully degoogled /e/os custom and unlegacy android (now defunct but archived) cannot FRICKING install apps
turns out PackageInstaller app is a_fricking google app so having to degoogle means you LACK basick package installation or management capabilities. I had to scour the web for at least a single degoogled package installer.apk but HOW DO YOU FRICKING INSTALL AN APK WHEN YOU CAN'T INSTALL AN APK IN THE FIRSTPLACE?!?!?!
Well I didn't also have functional USB debugging (the phone/tablet had no fricking OTG support) so I had to use Wireless ADB and install the app using ADB from another PC.
Fricking mess and now they're removing dialer app. literally the SINGLE app that no dev not even the cool jeetdevs can just do. I mean google coulda exclusived their messaging app (they did) but we had a lot of replacement on f-droid - it's just they don't support RCS lol (wheres the source? even if "RCS" is open which it isn't...), their calendar which f-droid has too in droves, but they picked on the dialer app.
Well perfect time to archive android at this point (only for legacy apps lol) and go full apple. I hope I get the one with 00/01/02 on its country IMEI not the jeet one!
