You see macOS doesn't need more than 8GB of ram because it uses memory more efficiently. How, you ask? Well, macs use a little something called swap memory. For you non-technical people out there, the benefit of swap memory is that it potentially turns your entire hard drive/ssd into more RAM, for free. I know what you're thinking, this sounds too good to be true. But I guarantee you it's very real and one of the advantages of buying a new macbook pro m3 today

Bullshit argument. Swap is slow and if you use your computer for anything serious, regardless of operating system, you will need more RAM. Cope and seethe, macgay

8GB of ram capacity was standard in desktop motherboards by 2006 aka about 20 years ago. 8GB of soldered non upgradable ram in 2024 is a joke and completely unjustifiable.

Most of the desktop motherboards reviewed here back in 2006 supported 8GB of ram.
In fact here's a couple from 2005, the $200 Gigabyte GA-8I955X Royal (955X chipset) which supports 8GB of ram and the MSI P4N Diamond supports 16GB using EM64T.
            https://www.anandtech.com/show/1796
XP 64bit came out in 2005 along with widespread adoption of DDR2 and larger memory modules. I certainly didn't have a computer with 8GB back then but any enthusiast could have easily built one by going to any computer parts store and not a "parallel earth"

can someone explain to me why apple thought they needed to make a separate GPU that can only be accessed by a special proprietary API and is not generally accessible to userspace apps like the main GPU? "We FINALLY put a chip in there that will sit unused 90% of the time!!!"

        Anonymous

        >by a special proprietary API
everything about their OS is proprietary
their hardware is not designed to run eg linux
what's the problem with using their provided API (CoreML or whatever it is)?
you don't access the GPU yourself either, silly, you rely on proprietary drivers provided by NVIDIA/AMD
are you annoyed that the GPU doesn't participate in tasks programmed for the CPU?

my understanding is it's down to their weird hybrid architecture
also I might have read somewhere that even certain GPU stuff can be offloaded to the "neural" parts of the chip if it's the right kind of workload
the point is, I think your mental model of CPU + GPU is not quite accurate with regard to the state of physical processors and the specialized shit the marketplace wants for ML
I don't like it myself but it is what it is

With the older mac mini's their form factor severely limited the CPU's ability to achieve high performance due to the temp throttling because its just a tiny fan that has to push out all the heat intel's CPU's can produce through a tiny hole. Apple silicon on the minis actually makes sense
