Has anyone actually go on to become fluent in French after working through picrel?

Has anyone actually go on to become fluent in French after working through picrel? This book is not really for learning French but rather to help academics read French articles through recognising grammar and cognates. You don’t actually memorise any grammar and why it is used.

Even once you’ve completed the book, you haven’t really started reading in French either. You’ve simply learned how to translate the words in your head into English, you haven’t actually internalised any French, and therefore you probably get a worse level of elucidation then if you simply read a translation.

But has anyone actually gone on to develop fluency from this position, and if so how?

The way to learn a language is not with books. It's with movies and animes with subtitles in the mother tongue and in the target language.

If you are not inspired for sources, you can check those out :

You can watch french TV (which is shit) with a VPN and https://captvty.fr

You can watch french prostitutes reading famous books in french:

you watch movies and animes with subtitles available in your mother tongues and in french.

the best way is to mute the sound and then read aloud the french subtitles. If you don't know a word, you switch the subs in your mother tongue for quick translation.
This way you learn to speak quickly and in a natural way.

It's best to do it with animated series because the episodes are short. It turns out reading aloud an entire episode drains energy pretty quickly. SO find some animes you like with soundtracks or subs available in your mother tongue and start just watching reading the french subs and then move on to reading aloud

The best way to learn any language is to consoom it and immerse yourself, just like babies learn naturally by assimilation, not grammar. Hence, the 'Natural Method'.

Then why don’t anime fans start picking up Japanese because of how many hours they spend watching subs?

I did 5 years of Japanese classes in High School and I watched anime with subtitles for about 10 years
I never picked up Japanese beyond a few phrases
I am still a Krashen cultist though

Because they make no effort and because with Japanese it would be better to have a foundation prior to diving into it, as it is a very hard language, wherein the symbols matter just as much as the spoken words, not like there is a clear alphabet

first of all, because watching with subs in your native language does NOTHING to help you acquire the target language, this has been proven scientifically. You need both the audio and the subtitles in the target language. Aside from that, you also need a minimal amount of knowledge about the language, which I doubt most weaboos have. You need to know the alphabet, basic sentence structure, basic conjugation, a small vocabulary... things that a text like French for Reading provides, which makes it perfect as an initiation into the language.

Because they make no effort and because with Japanese it would be better to have a foundation prior to diving into it, as it is a very hard language, wherein the symbols matter just as much as the spoken words, not like there is a clear alphabet

            >and because with Japanese it would be better to have a foundation prior to diving into it
exactly, but not only japanese, any distant language.
I speak a romanic language, so I learned Italian essentially by jumping straight into movies with Italian subs and it was easy. But with German I couldn't do that, it'd go 100% over my head and I'd make no progress. In this case, I used German for Reading to kickstart the process, and about 1/3 into the book I was understanding German subs just fine. It's why

didn't learn anything from it. Subs MUST be in the target language.

Just low IQ. I watched anime for a few years and maybe had a vocab of about 500 words and a variety of phrases before I started learning it.

        this

        .
The reason why movies are the absolute BEST way to learn a new language is because you are able to understand it regardless of the language.
You understand because of the image. Once you understand the message - even not understanding the language itself - you WILL assimilate the language.
This is the goal: immerse yourself to the point you are so interested in the material you forget the language itself.
It's how kids learn playing games: they don't give a frick about learning a language but they end up learning anyway

      >You can watch french prostitutes reading famous books in french
Frick I remember that show, it was (still is? Don't know) a classic of very late night, bitter end of a night out with friends, watching these women reading random stuff while high or drunk as an elephant. At first you found yourself laughing about it with your friends and then watch the room slowly becoming silent as everyone got hypnotized by the woman's legs and the author's text. Also a weird and eerie form of masturbation material for depressed boomers. Thanks for the memories, man

It's to bootstrap you so you can read French ASAP. Then you read a lot of French. If you want to speak and write French, speak and write French in addition to reading it. It's not that complicated.

    >But has anyone actually gone on to develop fluency from this position, and if so how?
What position? Knowing a basic 500-1500 words of core vocabulary and basic rules of syntax and grammar just gets you to the point that you can read any text in principle with a dictionary (and a native speaker to ask about really rare or difficult constructions). Then you just do that for a long time until you know 5000 to 20,000 words. Composition is a different part of the brain, so if you want to know them in the sense of being able to use them rather than just recognize them, make sure to speak and write a lot as soon as you can or as soon as you find it enjoyable. It'll take a couple years to reach fluency, or several months if you do basically nothing but practice.

    >You’ve simply learned how to translate the words in your head into English, you haven’t actually internalised any French,
This is a silly notion which, as far as I can tell, comes from people who take methods like Krashen's too seriously and turn "immersion" into a magical bean that solves everything, while "translating" is some one-to-one process of merely knowing conceptually that Tree = Arbre. But if you actually read extensively for even a little while you will quickly realize that your mind doesn't bother to translate conceptually, it simply learns foreign vocabulary the way it learns any vocabulary. Your conscious, conceptual thinking may kick in here and there to recall a mnemonic, but fundamentally your mind simply knows that arbre is tree, as in tree the actual thing, not tree the English word for tree the actual thing.

The only time you do this sort of "translation" is at the beginning. You will find very quickly when doing extensive reading that your mind doesn't have time to slow down and translate anything, it just zips ahead and guesses based on context and patterns, far faster than conscious conceptual thought can follow. That's why extensive reading is so great. Understanding grammar and syntax just gives you the guide-rails so that when ambiguities arise, you can get yourself back on track and gliding along again. Textbooks are only there to paint the guide-rails on the road in a minimally annoying fashion. Some are better at it, some are worse, but actually getting on the road is the main thing either way.

tl;dr: Just read a lot. All reading is reading. When in doubt, read (and speak/write if you want) more.

    >You’ve simply learned how to translate the words in your head
    have you read it?
if not, how can you be so opinionated?
there are many resources for learning a new language and none of them will get you to fluency alone.
I read the German one and although I still have a hard time producing output I can comfortably read a novel.
The book and the methodology is very efficient in getting you ability to read as quick as possible, and that opens new possibilities for studying. I essentially read German for Reading and watched german movies with german subs until I was understanding essentially 100% of the subs. That's when I added simple texts and built up from there.

The book teaches you to recognise cognates by drilling you with them throughout the entire book but it does teach you vocabulary, it teaches you a lot of words that aren't cognates at least not obviously cognates
Did you just stop after chapter 1 or 2?
The cognate thing is helpful because it gives the author some real building blocks with which to drill the reader with when grammar is introduced
It'd be boring if you had to read sentences involving the same dozen or so words that the author has taught you already
Personally I think the cognate instruction is extremely helpful
I'm not sure what you mean by memorise grammar
What do you mean by 'Why is it used?'
Personally my philosophy is to just accept the textbooks approach of saying that after a certain verb you use this preposition, after that conjunction you use the subjunctive, what more could you want?
I think your point about translation is a valid one but I don't see how the method this book uses, i.e reading lots of passages of French and then later paragraphs, is particularly susceptible to their translation issue?
I finished the books a few months ago and now I've read the first 3 Harry Potter books + Le Petit Prince, do you have any questions?

Reading the first volume of Grammaire Progressive du Français and doing the exercises will give you a solid basis to start advancing in the language. Watch also cute French youtubers who teach and speak to an audience that is learning the language (I like Nelly). Then move to the second volume (the first one you can finish in two months very comfortably) and thereafter you can already read Tintin, Camus L’Étranger and other works without any difficulties.

I learned french, and 80% of that was achieved by listening to harry potter audiobooks in french translation over and over again, although this has led apparently to some eccentricity in my preferred vocab

But it was a complete waste of time. I have a visceral sense of disgust for most french classics. And french women are just the same as women everywhere.

Wish I learned German or Russian instead, but the time investment required to learn post age 30~ just isn't worth it

Age literally does not matter in learning languages, unless of course you're a bald fat goblin who can barely walk and have to keep a to-do list with you at all times, in which case you've got bigger problems than other languages.

Since no-one else properly responded to your question.
I used this book and his other book 'German for Reading' to learn to translate older academic papers in my field (math/physics).
I've also seen 'Russian for Mathematicians' in a similar vein but I've never tried that book since Cyrillic seemed to big a gap.

For that, both of these books got me to a really high level to the point where I could start reading academic texts almost as well as in English.
I don't really care about speaking/listening/writing so never practiced, but when I visited Germany, I was reasonably conversational as well but not great.
So yes, these books are basically perfect and will definitely teach you the language ** for reading ** and nothing more.

Although nowadays, when I'm learning a language, I prefer to just memorize poetry instead.
That seems much more effective for me personally than immersion or anything else since you'll truly internalize the grammar and structure and every word will be perfectly committed to memory in context. Also much less boring.
After memorizing a bunch of Laozi (with the characters), my Classical Chinese actually got pretty good extremely quickly, so maybe try that instead.

Something else that's important to think about
And I'm sure the book covers this, but I'll say it anyways
Spoken French is different from written french. There are many of them where you don't pronounce much of the endings. For example, "Ils aiment" is french for "they love" and it's pronounced closer to "ils aim". You don't pronounce the -ent at all. It's stupid lol.
Anyways my point is, if you try to learn French solely through reading you are going to have fricked up pronunciation. True for any language, but especially for French. I think it's important to watch a TV show where you can follow the subtitles, or listen to an audiobook while following along with a hard copy, so you can see the word and get it's pronunciation.
Also there are FIVE past tenses used in written French that are not really used in spoken French. Again I'm sure the book covers it.

The book doesn't teach you about pronunciation at all, AFAIK there isn't a single sentence in the entire book that mentions pronunciation
I suppose that since this book is designed to be taught in a university classroom, which is funny considering this is the most auto-didactic book I've ever found, the teacher probably would take care of that
Then again there is a youtube series by a teacher who covers the book and his pronunciation is atrocious

Try to pace yourself, it's very easy to burn out with these books
Also be aware that no single book will be able to equip you with the necessary vocabulary to read fluently

i remember reading this in the summer a bit and found it was boring trash. i like to read and watch tv in french. i guess i'll download it again to see if it's worthwhile. i honestly think if you want to learn through reading you should just use a popup dictionary like language reactor, lute, learning with texts, lingq, etc.

You're right that the book is extraordinarily, sleep-inducingly boring
          >I honestly think if you want to learn through reading you should just use a popup dictionary like language reactor, lute, learning with texts, lingq, etc.
Personally I think you save yourself a lot of time using one of these books first because you'll be able to recognise function words and grammar structures immediately
