      >Pay problem. Employees will extract benefits that equal to what they perceive their worth to be. This can include storing breast milk on-site and stealing breast milk on-site. Also a management problem if incompatible employees have to be wrangled into cooperating and this actually stalls things or is a problem.
      >Logistics problem. Devs need assets, they get uncompressed assets, compression and optimization for compression/decompression never happens because that's someone else's problem and that someone does not exist.
      >Logistics and testing problem. Devs need assets, they get unoptimized assets because requirements were never properly specified, testing would be needed to identify a problem but test cases were never created until it was too late to change anything.
      >Upper management problem. Consolidating control is a natural instinct in bad companies. This can only be solved by holding them to account, something that can be an issue when the problems only arise years later and the window for retaliation and interest has closed.
None of this is a developer issue, sure they also probably suck, but everything else around them caught on fire first. This is an issue caused by management, logistics, HR and executives.

There's was a sweet spot somewhere with respect to fun for money. Pic related is a game from the 1980s that in current dollars cost about $75. You're a diver trying to collect bars of gold from the bottom of the ocean and return them to your boat at the top of the screen without getting eaten by a shark. Higher levels just have more sharks and they get faster. That's the entire game. The replay value is pretty low.

Whenever I write code it's a tradeoff between being implementing it as quick as possible with as little bugs as possible (it's also supposed to be extensible and future-proof), and putting effort into optimizing something in multiple iterations until it's somehow good enough.

The problem with programming nowadays is that there's very little motivation to do the latter, while the former is what employers want from programmers. The outcome is that hardware resource usage is not optimal.

    So true...

    >Maybe in game dev but in general programming has gotten harder.
No! In the 80s we had to create everything by ourselves from the bottom up, there was no engine, no library, no nothing. Also you had to make your game compatible with CGA, Hercules, EGA, Tandy... Same shit for sound... You had to be very good and very passionate to succeed. It's so fricking easy now that even stupid people can code, and here is the result, hardware is 10000x more powerful but software is 10000000x less optimized.

Even earlier in the 8-bit era, you had to support entirely different CPUs and video display chips. Most games were on at least Commodore and Atari, with Apple and Tandy/Radio Shack being common platforms too.

No. This is a stupid comparison. Anyway, I do agree that there are much more badly made games being released because the pool of game developers is much larger nowadays. We have much more tools, techniques, engines, programming languages, learning resources, assets available which make it easy to build and release games. However, games today are much, much bigger, more complex and hardly comparable to the ones released 2 or more decades ago.

      >However, games today are much, much bigger, more complex and hardly comparable to the ones released 2 or more decades ago.
Games are heavier and slower these days because of assets, not game logic. NetHack and Dwarf Fortress are highly complex games, logic wise. NetHack's entire source code, uncompressed, is ~20MB, compiled on my linux machine it is 10MB, DF's current windows .zip build is ~13MB. Complexity isn't the problem, it's asset bloat.

There are definitely more lazy/bad developers today, but that's just because the field is growing. The bigger problem is that even most of the driven/good devs are working in massive corporations where they get paid well but end up having very little impact due to the size and mismanagement of the company.

Games companies have gotten worse at hiring. They don't hire real talent anymore. Consequently, the only people there don't know what the frick they're doing.

Good developers are excluded from the get-go unless they show up with a uterus and lots of melanin. Given the bell curve IQ distribution, it should not be surprising that this results in "devs" like IQ-55 Shaneequa who can't find the on switch and can't read the big words on the screen, but who gets paid six figures until the studio tanks, then puts this on her resume and gets hired by the next big studio for double what this one paid her to sit in her cubicle with BET blaring from her workstation, glaring at the huh-WITE! woman across the room.
