I finally upgraded by older 2017 tablets this year. Here is what I went with:
$100 FEONAL 10.1 inch Android tablet with IPS and android 12.
$75 UMIDIGI G1 8 inch Android tablet with ISP and android 14.
    $140 in fold-able keyboards the Protoarc XKM01, Protoarc XK02 and Kysona KF65.

All function perfectly and so far have done everything I've thrown them. Anything needing a larger screen is going to be on a monitor or laptop.

    i can't think of a single thing i'd use a 14.6" media tablet for
like it's too big to put in a pocket or use for anything standing around like a phone, but then it's also got no keyboard or trackpad to use it on a table like a laptop, either
like any media tablet really it's in this in-between area where it doesn't really fit anywhere

  27. 1 week ago

I think that, for tablets, it's best to go for a 10' or 11' screen, this is a bit too big for me, even has a notch to it... usually it doesn't have a keyboard to it unless I attach one, so I can get it pretty close, which makes the smaller screen a non issue, it's a lot more comfortable like this actually... and if I do want a bigger screen? Well, that's where stuff like DeX comes in, or screen casting to a TV too.

I think the main issue stopping Samsung from a real domination of the market is how they do the whole DeX thing, only having external monitors work on higher end models is complete BS really.

Also, screen casting needs to be more simple, an iPad can do it quite seamlessly with any smart TV out there, even Samsung, but for Samsung it's a chore to do wireless or HDMI screen cast at all...

taller screens or screens that are closer to a square are better for tablets. The old 4:3 ipads are the ideal, 3:2 or 7:5 in oneplus’ case is passable.

        except they can't?
there is still no easy way to run multiple programs seamlessly without having to deal with swapping or it "pausing" one for the other. the interfaces have to be oversized and huge because it expects pen or touch input, thus resulting in an overall worse experience as you're forced to either use radial menus and assign each fricking shortcut manually which takes eons and deal with menu after menu or, even worse: they just take all the options away from you and you get a shittier experience (see: photoshop on ipad)
        wanna know what's comfy?
an ipad + sidecar in macos.
it feels -right- and the fact that you can't fricking have a real OS on the ipad and are fricking tethered to the goddamn macbook is fricking garbage and i hate it.
i was so frustrated by what could've been that i sold my macbook, gave my ipad to a friend and just bought a cheapo huion pen display + a steam deck because even though i'm still tethered to a machine i can at least just stuff the steam deck into my bag and just have the tablet out.

When the first tablets were released, I already considered them idiotic devices and that hasn't changed. And instead of 'using it' for whatever these things could be used for, you just make a photo of the home screen and try to farm internet points to make yourself feel less bad for paying for a piece of trash device you don't need

How do people even take notes on these things? I see my classmates using them all the time, and I don’t *think* they’re holding their pens in a way that involves pressing their palms on the screen.

I have a Samsung Galaxy 10 or some such shit and taking notes on it fricking blows. It’s like writing calligraphy with a paint brush and 500x worse than just using paper and pencil.

      Anonymous

Its inferior to paper and pencil in terms of writing experience but all the organization and storage is handled by software so its more convenient. It worked better for me than notebooks but in the end I just stopped taking notes, if you can't pass all your college courses without notes its just a skill issue tbh.

No. When it comes to tablets, it's best to have it at a medium size, if it's smaller you might aswell use a smartphone since most of them go near a 7' size now, and too big like OP's looks off, 11' is the standard for tablets, and has been for a long while, for a reason, it just works. OP's is too big.

I can't find anything about DeX going away, just that the Mac app was delisted a couple of years ago. Am I missing something? As an iPad user, I don't want that to happen. That would give Apple more reason to keep the iPad crippled.

they """"updated it""""" in their latest android release, and the update was to basically drop the most barebones features of DeX on the default launcher itself. You can still reboot the tablet into traditional DeX mode but it's very obvious where things are going next

Why is the tablet market such a joke? I really just want an x86 OLED tablet that doesn't perform like complete shit, and preferably something dockable, the closest thing I could find was an Asus Vivobook, which was both Oled and x86, but then it's performance was so shit that it struggled to use a browser. Why is it that there just doesn't exist a tablet tablet with detachable/flippable keyboard with the APU of a Steam Deck? I'd also settle for a Steam deck with detachable controllers.
