Every programmer should be forced by law to develop their software on a 2 GB memory laptop.
This would save the industry over night and 8 GB would then almost be too much for most users.

Wangblows 10 uses 12 gb at rest

      Skill issue

8 gigs of RAM used to be enough, then Chrome came along.

      ~~*Chrome*~~
      What to expect

I do photo editing and video editing at the same time on my 8 GB loonix without a problem. The only time I notice the laptop heat up a little is when watching big high quality video files. But could also be a mpv problem, idk. For some videos it needs a while to open even when the audio already started playing lol.

      >I do photo editing and video editing at the same time on my 8 GB loonix without a problem.
      Same except on windoors

you probably just don't realise how slow it is, if you had more memory you'd never believe you put up with it for so long

      >you probably just don't realise how slow it is, if you had more memory you'd never believe you put up with it for so long
On the contrary. Fun story: some time ago I was cleaning my pc. For some moronic movement or who knows I dislodged a bit one of the ram modules. I ended up with 4gb for frick knows how long till one day I opened the task manager and was like "wait a minute, why I have only 4gb ram?"
I'm still kinda surprised I didn't notice anything wrong for that long.

I got some pretty big data (matrices representing simulation data). It's real nice to be able to keep it all in memory while doing processing like gaussian elimination and so on, and having to constantly read and write disk when doing that is a real drag.
For bigger data, got a server with 4TB allocated to one VM. Not so many motherboards cope with more memory than that.

This RAM alone cost me 800$, it's registered ECC. I care about my data.
For ECC you also will need a more expensive CPU & mobo (unless you want to go with uncertified gamer junk), so I ended up with a w7-2495X (2500$) and the asus W790-ACE mobo (800$). Also, most consumer CPUs max out at 192GB or below (and have issues running that stable anyway). That said, most people don't need this obviously

What usually happens is I leave a thread that gets to 1500 posts up and a few that get to like 600 or 700 before archiving. Between ublock, greasemonkey, and like a single Youtube window, I end up getting to 7.5G actual, and the machine starts thrashing like a b***h.

I don't know about that "Teamgroup" brand, and I wouldn't ask IQfy for recs when they are willing to buy chinkshit and not mind getting chinked and having to pay more over time than buying from a reputable brand of parts.
A-Tech brand RAM is inexpensive and with good rep, for instance.

Older machines are constantly being bought and resold, DDR3 is useful for anyone picking up an older machine that cannot benefit from DDR4 and DDR5 RAM sticks.
What really overpriced these days is second-hand DDR2 memory.
