gay overengineering. IQfy gets away with mysql and some nip php script written in 2002 and doesn't break nearly as much

You say that, but I'm having quite a frustrating time with lag spikes at the moment.
Downloading images of the order of a few kilobytes via right-click taking minutes on a gigabit broadband connection.
      Something's not right here.

I made a shit ass reddit clone in my web dev class in college. I did that shit in like a 6 hour session. looked like ass but it had separate pages for posts and communities. Only used PHP and SQL on the backend. such a simple concept.

    insane overengineering
    and for what?
a broken piece of shit with infinite scrolling that uses too much ram?

modern software (web apps, phone apps, windows and linux programs, etc.) is insanely, comically unoptimized and broken as frick. Look at pic rel, Google pretending to forget things that exist in my history even when searching for (almost) the exact string. It's like those IQfy programming memes where some guy tries to check if a number is even by writing a million ifs.

reddit's search function is broken too
updooting (the website's main appeal) is randomly generated by AIs so what's the fricking point?
      most users are bots
the interface is notoriously laggy and buggy
if you browse it on your phone it forces you to use the app using dark patterns, manipulation and by blocking you
and the app is even worse
buggy as frick, so bad that you can't even make a thread in it

      let's not forget about
      https://www.reddit.com/r/Blackout2015/comments/4ylml3/reddit_has_removed_their_blog_post_identifying/

it's mainly because people don't know how Linux works and Linux (like all OSes actually used) are woefully inadequate for a lot of infrastructure needs.
all these layers in the pic are just cope for it built on billions of dollars and a lot of dev hours to make it reasonably easy to use it.

Rabbit MQ is kinda necessary architecture. Their GraphQL bullshit is a mystery to me.

          Anonymous

          >RabbitMQ
          >necessary
It's an overengineered abomination that occasionally drops a message or two because it feels like it, while also being virtually impossible to debug.

          Anonymous

          >messaging system
          >necessary
it really, really depends what you're trying to accomplish. Most uses of messaging systems are an outright abuse and JMS features make it worse. if your messaging system isn't fan-out / fan-in, you're probably doing it wrong.

    itt:
    - reddit's new frontend is dogshit, and LARPs can't understand that it has nothing to do with the rest of their platform
    - 4chink doesn't need a lot of it therefore it's overengineering (meanwhile IQfy has no search, no users, and can't fight bots without requiring email addresses on IQfy or autistic posting delays in general since the IQfy autist)
this board is gay and you lots are fricking despair-inducing

real answer: graphql is a terrible idea, the rest is quite standard for large web platforms

      Anonymous

      >meanwhile IQfy has no search, no users
you have the whole open JSON API and boards aren't persisted long enough that the size of the search space is large.
      >email
every platform basically needs this nowadays unfortunately.

        Anonymous

        >boards aren't persisted long enough that the size of the search space is large
that too. the two sites are not even close to comparable in terms of the problems they have to solve.
reddit is still shit, but from and engineering perspective it is much harder to build

        >no search
        what are you talking about?

        >archive has search
and? archive != IQfy, not even close
and this archive in your example doesn't even bother indexing more than 7 boards
and probably has 15 daily users vs IQfy which probably has 1-2 millions
even a moron should understand how this is irrelevant, and that even if it was it would still not even be comparable

    why memcached instead of redis?

      Anonymous

      >why memcached instead of redis?
redis is fine, but has some limitations:
      - can't scale it horizontally in any decent way (redis cluster is fricking trash) without doing client-side sharding memcache-style
      - it is single-threaded, so eventually you reach the limit of your single-core speeds and need that sharding anyway
      - redis features that can't be used with memcache (fancier data types, pubsub, ...) tend be better implemented by other systems
