    Anything except for Kindle.
They all do the exact same thing. Some run Android (Boox, Supernote, Meebook), others run their own OSes. Just run Calibre and load your pirated books on them anyways because we all know that's what you want to do.
There's also a lot of competition in the 7" screen space right now between the Boox Page, Pocketbook Era, and Kobo Libra 2. In my opinion I think the 7-7.8" screen size is perfect for normal books and the vast majority of Manga.
I'd also like to mention that all of these e-readers get their screens from the exact same company, Amazon has timed exclusivity on certain screen models (the latest 10.3" 300ppi one in the Scribe to be exact). All that really matters is what glass they're putting in front of the screen as that can effect the contrast the clarity of the screen, although not by much.

7.8" is not enough for proper manga reading.

old ass kindle, jailbreak it or just leave it in airplane mode.

because what the frick else are you going to do with an e-reader regardless of brand?

as someone who's owned one, they are actually quite effective at browsing the web with way lower power consumption. Also if you like reading books, the e-ink screen is simply better than a normal display for it. Trust me.

Kobo clara hd is a great device, made by kobo so its not locked down you can install koreader which is a great reader software without the need for root exploits. The internal storage is a microsd so can be upgraded easily and you can bypass the need for an account just by editing a file via usb.

The other kobo devices dont have upgradable storage so i cant really recommend any of them. Either go with a clara hd or one of the android eink brands like boox

Not even. Unless it's some obscure book, most of the time if you search "[name of book] pdf" you get a pdf of the book on some uni's website or something

Kobo Libra 2 is a decent option for books and manga with Koreader. A Boox is better for the latter if you can justify spending $600 on one.
