momentum and monopoly. same shit that happened to older tech companies.

the cycle should be that they are eventually dethroned but it could be a decade or more.

Seriously, buying yt, waze, etc. every time they failed to beat the competition. They very likely had a bid for openai and just got beaten by ms.

my favorite was when they bought deepmind which was an ai company putting out incredible for the time ai results

literally after they bought them they did frick all with anything other than marketing themselves as an "ai first company" for years, shit all over themselves, and then got absolutely humiliated by everyone else who started actually innovating in ai

        embarrassing company

    > 1-3 dudes make some innovate, disruptive, best in class software in their basement
    > it generates more revenue than the creators know what to do with
    > decide to become job creators with the cash flow
    > hire thousands of people who all hire their friends and so on, productivity dies because a rotating cast of thousands of randos can't create something excellent in the same way that a tiny passionate team can
    > despite producing nothing for years the company continues to coast off its original product because it was just that good
    > finally gets eclipsed by the next disruptive thing created by 1-3 dudes in a basement
    > big company slowly dwindles away into nothing
Seems to be how all software goes

name a single example where such a company has "dwindled away into nothing". all the ones i can think of may decline from their, but remain large and valuable companies.

look at pretty much any of the biggest computer companies in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and see how they are now. most of them are dead. commodore, atari, tandy, etc. look at first gen phone winners like nokia or blackberry.

tech can be brutal. young morons don't know how things change.

Because everything the public moronicly thinks they make isn't and never was their real product, their real product is your data that they use to shill adsense to advertisers.

They aren't a search company anymore they are a military company. They are sponsored by the DoD and NSA, it's not about making search work for the civilians anymore its about counterops, propaganda, psyops, and datamining.

this isn't exactly right. they are still a search and ad company. but their geo-political importance and connections mean they are a search and ad company that the government cannot let fail and that represents power projection for america. their company is run off search and ads but their political status means they will be forced into success.

Because they spent a couple of decades embedding themselves and acquiring other companies first. Alternatives exist for each of their products, but they're out-of-sight (and therefore out-of-mind) for most people most of the time.
Also something that you or I might say "barely works" likely works well enough for normalgays.

google is an ads company, nothing more or less, they control adsense which spawns ads on search/maps/email, youtube and android.

The better question is if Google search is so obviously shit, why are the competitors somehow still worse?

Bing is a joke, DDG killed itself, Yandex image search is good(better than Googles), but their english search is dogshit (unsurprisingly)

AI aside, all search engines suck dick compared to what any of them were ~8 years ago. My guess is that they just went too far with search engine manipulation keeping homies from looking up conspiracy shit, but accidentally nuked the ability to look up anything as accurately as you used to.

I'm interested if there's anybody interested in making their own search engines, as most engines people currently use are closed source (partially to avoid SEO). If google started with some 3 guys in their garage it's probably not that complicated in current day, just working some kind of webcrawler/spider and an indexing system.

Just today it hit me how much this crap filled board had brainwashed me into believing every single popular piece of technology is deeply flawed and wrong and has stolen my joy and motivation to code in any language or framework out there because nothing's good enough, it's all "pozzed", the internet is dead, technology is a prison and whatnot. Never identifying problems and solutions, just giving up into numbed dread.

And to the median normie, technology just works. It solves their day to day problems. Yes, it could be better, but we will never make it better if we keep falling for this cynicism and letting corporations win.
