How come Germans started Larping as Romans instead of embracing their Germanic roots?

How come Germans started Larping as Romans instead of embracing their Germanic roots? Everyone laughed at them when they claimed to be Romans and even they themselves realize that.

It would’ve been much cooler if they embraced their roots and not larp as some “”holy”” “”””Roman””” empire. A Germanic kingdom would’ve been much more kino where a Germanic language was spoken instead 50000 German dialectics and vulgar Latin

For a number of reasons. Firstly because there is much value in the ideas and systems of the reasons. Secondly because they were variously subjected to their power and it was to them normalised. Thirdly because it helped to solidify their own rule by appealing to known convention. Fourthly, related to point number one, the Roman way of government is the supreme invention of our world this far. It has produced everything, a republic with powers and a presiding minister. I will not hear any comments about it belonging to the greeks (though if you will say it, that's fine too)

They should’ve unified and then created their own similar system as the Romans. Many tried to unify German tribes but there were always outside players trying to stop it. Imagine how powerful they would’ve been if they unified in the late Roman period and created their own state? Unlike the Romans who were an amalgamation of people, the Germans would’ve been a unique and functioned until modern day

"Imagine how powerful they would have been" what, like German stock ruling the modern world and creating the most prosperous period of all mankind that has taken us to the stars, unified us, and promises even more through science and reason?

      >the Roman way of government is the supreme invention of our world this far. It has produced everything, a republic with powers and a presiding minister.
is this actually a Roman invention? Can you even invent something that naturally arise?

Who laughed at the HRE? Besides the one (1) quote by Voltaire.
And the Holy Roman Empire is linked to the ideas of the Four Kingdoms of Daniel as well as the Translatio Imperii - the notions that the Roman Empire was the last empire before the return of Christ and thus "a" Roman Empire still has to be around.
      >where a Germanic language was spoken instead 50000 German dialectics
      So germanic languages?

This. Roman institutions (especially martial & authorities ones like miles, equites and dux) were also quite compatible with germanic ones. And other institutions were gladly adopted- like the various written germanic laws.

There were no notions of creating a unified germanic state. Various large tribal confederations existed, but those were usually formed in times of war for reasons of defense and offense.
And with the Frankish Kingdom, a more or less Germania state was established.

But no one saw them as Romans

The HRE never claimed to be italian romans.

Athenian Democracy is the supreme form of government. Republics are gay and so are emperors.

Because everyone knew that the romans were the best so they wanted to bring that back.

But they wanted to reconquer all the lands and bring the empire back. They couldn't do it but they wanted to. At that age claiming to be the descendant of the Roman Empire had a lot of prestige.

Because that never happened, at no point did Germans ever LARP as Romans. But they did become more like Romans through contact with them. "Holy Roman Empire" was not a commonly used title, that is a clumsy historiographical term. You could just as well call it the Christian Empire, or more commonly, just the Empire. But even when it was called the Roman Empire that was just a synonym of Empire on its own.

They didn’t. The Kingdom was called the Romans, they also called it the Kingdom of Germany. Nobody was calling themselves Roman outside of political claim. To be the Roman Empire was what was claimed. Not that they were Romans.

Because they were the auxiliaries of the Roman Empire, achieved autonomy in the Empire and then seamlessly took it over, when Rome fell.
So it‘s not a LARP. They are the true heirs of Rome.

The Later Roman Empire didn’t have auxiliaries and the only peoples that were given any kind of offical status and settled within the Empire (against Roman will) were the Visigoths. The Vandals, Seubi, most Alans, Burgundians and Saxons were never given any recognition by the Roman state

    >Everyone laughed at them when they claimed to be Romans and even they themselves realize that.
    >The Kings of France, who reigned over Europe's most populous country, were continuously frustrated by the primacy of the Emperors, but were never able to question it, even though they did object to the fact that the King of the Romans would similarly outrank them. The quest for higher status partly explains why the French kings sought the Imperial crown at the 1519 imperial election and again at the 1658 imperial election. As it happened, both attempts were unsuccessful.
    >The dissolution of the empire sent shockwaves through Germany, with most of the reactions within the former imperial boundaries being rage, grief or shame. Even the signatories of the Confederation of the Rhine were outraged; the Bavarian emissary to the Imperial diet, Rechberg, stated that he was "furious" due to having "put his signature to the destruction of the German name", referring to his state's involvement in the confederation, which had effectively doomed the empire.

It's due to the prestige of aligning oneself with a superior respected entity - a story as old as time.
German nationalists will deny it, but the Germanic-speaking peoples that overthrew the western Roman empire all considered the former Roman empire to be superior to themselves, and so they tried to appropriate its legitimacy for themselves along with its customs and culture.
Also, "Germanic" identity almost centainly didn't exist back then, so the Germanic-speaking barbarians would have felt little to no solidarity with their "Germanic" bretheren or attachment to their "Germanic" roots.

    >larped
    >they
    >nations at all

holy shit why is everyone in this board so actively moronic? does people here actually believes late antiquity group of savage rapists is in any manner similar to their 4chin "larp" or not "larp" arguments? op makes a moronic question and morons give moronic answers.

"they" didn't "larped",we know that they were aware of themselves being other people as romans because for one where both germanics and romance people co-existed they used barbaric law for germanics and roman law for locals, beyond the fact that "germans" as a nation didn't exist at all yet, the reason why your average germanic warlord would decide to claim themselves being the succesors of romans is because it was the only way to salvage legitimity both because romans were respected and because rome Itself was the homeland of the vatican, the major autority over medieval peasantry and major source of legitimity until the protestant reformation.

most germanic warlords that would later establish themselves when they conquered roman land had 0 legitimity, most of them were pagans up to that very point with some even converting AFTER actively conquering a roman province, were not descended from any family of renown, had no land rights nor land at all often, were not perceived as good people by their peasantry, were not respected, etc.
The only way they had to legitimate themselves was through the ROMAN Catholic church and the roman catholic god that their conquered subjects followed. the name of rome itself was a source of legitimity as well as a name heavy enough to impose respect through the whole continent
these weren't descisions done by a nation of people, in fact nations didn't , they were claims and names made by warlords trying to gain respect.

romans and rome wasnt either a word solely used to refer an ethnic group, roman was a adjective to refer roman law, roman church, anything related to the city of rome in consequence, roman political system, etc.
