How did it sell so well

In the era of smartphones and tablets how did a handheld console sell more than 130 million units thats almost as many as the DS and I see far less people using a switch in pubic. What made it so popular with norimes?

I hear it's a pretty good game, but it didn't really grab me personally. BotW had more soul.
The hardware is pretty cool. Modchippable with a Pi Pico, piracy is really easy, there are ports of RetroArch and lots of emulators to Horizon OS, and it runs Android and Linux if you want since it's just a Tegra X1.

Smart phones turned out to be shit for games due to bad controls (touch controls are shit, and there isn't a good option for external Bluetooth controllers) also having infinite south Asian junkware games in the iOS and android app store
People like having dedicated controls and either physical games, or an application store that isn't loaded with 10 million candy crush clones
It's the same reason the PS4 and 5 are super successful, or the Steam Deck is decently successful

Jut their games themselves. Even if a handful.

I've said elsewhere that Apple has no chance of gaining any ground at gaming, unless they made some pact with Nintendo. It's the one thing Sony and MS will never have, and it's too late to enter that territory directly.

Good exclusive games. And obviously they couldn't be emulated at the time like they can be now.

It's a good console with good games. It also has no competition (except for phones (but they don't count)).

Its a shame they are making a 2. This really had a chance to outsell the PS2 but it seems like an impossibility now.
Count on Japanese to be the creator and enabler of impossible to beat records.

Yeah. Nintendos IPs are extremely valuable, mostly because of all the nostalgia.

But then again all nintendos consoles aren't successful. The worse and more gimmicky ones are more successful.

      >gamecube
Powerful hardware, almost no gimmicks, not a success
      >wii
Weak hardware (almost no upgrade), tons of annoying gimmicks, big success
      >wii u
Big hardware upgrade, controller is kind of a gimmick but it's not in the way, not a success
      >switch
Weak hardware (almost no upgrade), tons of annoying gimmicks, big success

animal crossing is legitimately the most boring game I have ever played. its excruciatingly boring and the entire thing is a very spaced out grind for "crafting materials" that appear so sparsely that it takes hours to find them yet often enough that you wont just quit.
      truly mind numbing crap

Game on the crapper and then put it in the dock and continue on a living room TV. Put it to sleep when you get bored. Week later feel like gaming again and just pick it up and continue where you left of. It’s this simple yet brilliant functionality that made Switch a success. This and good first party support.

    >In the era of smartphones and tablets how did a handheld console sell more than 130 million units
It's a home console, unlike phones, and it runs popular Nintendo games.
    >I see far less people using a switch in pubic.
It's not as portable as a DS, so most use it docked to a TV, on the couch or on road trips or flights. DSes were popular to take with you everywhere because they fit in pockets. The Switch doesn't.

      >DSes were popular to take with you everywhere because they fit in pockets. The Switch doesn't.
Even the Switch Lite is too cumbersome for me, I wish they would've mimicked the GBA SP's design for it

Older games are better, they don't have as much content or customization options but interactions with npcs are much more varied and they actually have agency which makes it more fun. New Horizons is basically just a dollhouse

It sold because it was the only console Nintendo was selling. Back then they would sell a home console along a handheld which would splinter sales.

Nintendros will blindly buy anything in recent years.
A bunch of people will buy multiple Switch or every game just so they feel like they fit in or so they can post a screenshot of it on reddit for internet points.
