If you measure a 3 in nature but your calculations say 1+1 then obviously you are missing a part. Of course you should add a variable in this case representing the missing part.

      >but your calculations say 1+1
Anon the 1+1 comes from observations of galactic mass

      calculations say 3.

      observations say 2.

model doesn't work when you look at reality
      model to account for reality
Why not abandon the model since it has been falsified?

You still need a model that reproduces the successes of the previous model, or its one step forward, two steps back.

Relativity did not falsify Newtonian mechanics, and whatever replaces relativity will probably not falsify it either. Incomplete is not the same as being outright false.

I assume you're talking about dark matter. I don't really believe it exists either. There are other theoretical ideas that get proposed though but they tend to either not be complete or they fail during experiments. I don't think they just chuck in some extra numbers and call it a day though like your meme suggests, the research is ongoing

Measurements of speeds of many galaxies spinning around their axes don’t fit with measurements/estimations of their mass

thats not an experiment, thats an observation based on a massive stack of presumptions none of which are known to be true

There's a bunch of alternative theory experiments listed here

That is more or less what it means when they say the universe is ninety percent dark matter or whatever the meme number is. Of course there are many physicists who do consider that more of a place holder marking how much predictions are off by, but others insist there really is loads of invisible stuff out there causing the phenomenon.

    https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/5-truths-dark-matter/
    >Dark matter doesn’t have to be a particle, but to say, “It can be a field just as easily as it can be a particle,” glosses over the big truth: that dark matter behaves in exactly the fashion that we’d expect a new population of cold, massive, non-scattering particles to behave. Particularly on large cosmic scales, i.e., the scales of galaxy clusters (about ~10–20 million light-years) and larger, this particle-like behavior can only be substituted for with a field that behaves indistinguishably from how particle dark matter would.

      >It can be a field just as easily as it can be a particle
All fields are just statistical averages of particle dynamics - so this is rather redundant.

New degrees of freedom necessarily imply new particles unless quantum mechanics is wrong. That’s the point.

Basic scientific methodology - you rule out simple explanations before you start looking at more complicated explanations.

"Maybe there's some types of matter we're not accounting for" is way easier to tackle and rule out than "maybe our entire understanding of gravity that's worked to accurately predict and explain shit for the last century is completely wrong and we have to go back to the drawing board".

That said, now that MACHOs and WIMPs are both basically ruled out, they're rapidly running out of CDM candidates.
