Why would I need or want to annotate a book?

Annotating is worth it if cross referencing other work, but the average person doesn't need to do it. You definitely don't need to be annotating game of thrones, doubt there's significant reason to do so. I'm pretty sure OP pic is just death count.

Well if you're going to annotate, then "the most reddit way of doing it" is pretty convenient. It doesn't destroy the book and it's easily accessible. I don't see what is wrong with it?

The only qualm one could have with this annotation style is that it's in your face, like "IM ANNOTATING," but otherwise it's completely practical. It's annoying to have to sift through pages.

      Women hobby

If you're a woman you needn't ask yourself about this. Its a natural thing for you to do. But if you're a man, lets say that its a woman thing

I have never tabbed, annotated, or highlighted any passage from any book. Do you have dementia or something?

Why would I need or want to annotate a book?

i would think to revisit a passage and have a visualization of all the points in the book for a specific thought or point. because idk about you guys but i dont find much value in plugging and chugging literature. for something to have meaning it should be revisited/ systemized/ and stored. like when in school when the stacies and chads routinely bullied you the message that youre a loser got cemented in.

I still don't see why you want to do that. I read for fun. I'm not preparing for an exam or a research paper.

No one ever bullied me anon, but if you don't want to use stickers, you can write in a notebook, or a file if you prefer it digitally, the page number and a short note what it is about (just like a sticker, wow!)

i should have been more specific about what i dont like about the GOT annotations. going in from the top is useless, useing one color is slightly less useless but still inefficient in remembering why you found a specific except interesting, (did i leave a tab here because its central to the theme? or because it reminds me of my mother?) , i would think that color coding would make more sense rather than all of them being one color. but that might just be a skill issue on my part. infinite jest Black folk can kill themselves though. defacing a book is cringe, highlighting with a marker is acceptable for text books, but shits on the book otherwise.

The only problem I can see if that we can see it. Posting yourself doing it online is kind of lame.

No. You'll find my books at the second hand shop with whole pages highlighted and notes like "???" or "Powerful" written in pen.

Why would someone annotate a fiction book like ASOIAF?
I can see myself doing so when reading philosophy or theology.

I write my notes in emacs org mode and either hyperlink to the specific page of the pdf or just keep note of the page numer as well.

because it is actually impossible to quickly and meaningfully extract information from notes made in this format. the matching colors for each book defeat the purpose of colored posbreasts in the first place and proves that the person who put them there only did it for aesthetics.

based. put your notes in a searchable format on a computer. otherwise you will have very little use for them.

    >and why is picrel the most reddit way of doing it
Because you may as well re readthe fricking books if you have that many tabs? What does that 3rd pink tab mean? The 15th blue one? They're there to show others you read them, and that you thought parts were so good you want to re experience them. Nothing about if the book is good or not.

I now put a 1 or an I on every page that I effortread, i.e. read while standing. The emotional reactions are real, I store those in my soul and dreams.
For university I used to pencil notes and associations in the margins, but I don't do that anymore.
