It's hard to get behind her, because she literally just doesn't like men. You can tell that's the driving force behind everything. This underlying assumption that men are "abusive", and trying to get one over on her.

I've met trannies. They're not "dangerous thugs". They're mostly weird autistic kids, who you can only really feel bad for them, because the world hasn't given them anything they feel like they can belong to.
It's just kind of absurd to jump to the assumption that high test, "rapey" men, are putting on women's clothing like Bugs Bunny, in some absurd scheme to get access to and molest JK Rowling.

If people want to rape, they rape. They don't need such elaborate hairbrained schemes.
They usually do it in groups, in parts of the world where police don't care, against people who are regarded as low class and unimportant.

This is one of those rare news stories where each and every single person involved was a truly, terrible person.
The bill was being used by Sturgeon to provoke WM and she could use her political strategy of saying they would bat down devolved issues and challenge it in court. Then the story got picked up about the rapist and having spent public funds on the issue, it couldn't die, if she backed down it would appear weak to her separatist supporters and we now know the parties finances were being misrepresented as support for independence died down. I'd have to go back and watch the speeches given by her and Ross at the time but blimey were they bad.
Each and every politician involved and the charities using it as a political footbal, awful and it just fed and fed into Rowling's friendbase of TERFs.

In the end all Sturgeons "well meaning" bill did was weaken support for her own nationalist cause as she offended her working class votership and everyone else got up in arms over one thing or the other.

It's been a long time and I'm not a writer, but two things jumped out at me: The first was a whole lot of plot elements that never make sense. It didn't bother me much, since it's a fricking kid's book series about wizards and shit, but as the series went on I think the age of the characters (and her audience) outgrew her writing ability. If you're 18 reading about 18-year-olds you expect better writing than when you're 12.

The bigger issue for me was just super amateurish prose. It gets worse as the series goes on, so like 3/4 of the way through the series I'm reading this shit and thinking it most closely reminds me of a 400-chapter furry fanfiction I read in the 2000s. Overuse of adverbs, repeating the same descriptions or conversations a few pages apart, characters doing things with no explanation, awkward phrasing, etc.. I assume it gets worse because Rowling got more editorial control as she got more powerful. Honestly, I'd like to see a book or maybe even a chapter of HP re-written by someone with more skill.

          Anonymous

Agree. I had seen bits and pieces of the movies over the years and had a very diferent impression of this series, then I actually read one of those books. The characters, to me at least, read more like children at the begining of elementary school, but they are supposed to be around 12. The way I'd describe the prose is "choppy."
          >Overuse of adverbs, repeating the same descriptions or conversations a few pages apart, characters doing things with no explanation, awkward phrasing, etc
Agreed. I don't think the book series would've been this popular without the movie series, I know that the first 4 books were published before the first movie came out (2001) but from what I've read the first book came out in 97 (or 98 outside of the UK) and the movie rights were sold in 99 the year it began showing up in Best Sellers list. I think HP would've been popular but within the standards of other similar children's series from the late 90's and early 2000's but the movies happening this fast it got astroturf into this level of popularity. The books are garbage tier in regards of being books, but I guess they worked better as source material for what became a popular movie franchise (horrible writing too but I guess the satiated the masses' need for fantasy movies at the time).

As a note there was already a movie deal in the works by 1998. They were working to make Harry Potter into a movie series as soon as it hit America. Harry Potter basically from the very beginning was always slated to be a hollywood franchise.

No, in all honesty she just hit lightning in a bottle and captivated a large portion of the Anglosphere's youth when kids still read books and watched movies before the internet/video games took over as their main interest. She won an award in Britain that's voted on by kids only which skyrocketed her sales in schools and book stores. Hollywood had so much money to throw around it would've been stupid not to lock up a movie deal with the author.
