I literally posted evidence how long it lasts while browsing IQfy. I've seen the battery timer show 25 hours at 99% at complete idle but it drops to around 17-19 hours when browsing. These 8th gen Intels use so little power it's amazing and it's perfectly adequate for most laptop tasks.

They are indeed nice, my Nuc8 seems more efficient than Ryzen when encoding (although results are kinda cucked by AV1 being picky with core loads) but 17h browsing is doubtful unless you have some joke resolution set at minimum brightness. Battery timer isn't an accurate measurement btw but just an estimation. (I take you're talking about EliteBook 830 G5?)

            Anonymous

830 G6. It has a 51Wh battery and according to the power meter, it uses around 2.7-3.1W browsing, 2.1W Idle.
I have a Nuc 8 as well and it's so good that I don't feel like upgrading for another decade, also keep in mind the Nuc uses the 28W variant of the chip with a much better graphics core and 128MB L4 cache.

Not too realistic, even for 1 core with the others being shut down in bios. Just seems like a faulty display from the monitor. Doubt you get much more than 10h in actual hours vs estimates.

I had a Macbook Pro 2013 with a 4th Gen i5 that does 2.7W idle according to coconutbattery so it's not too surprising that a newer chip can do around that level of efficiency.
The 830 G6 got some bad reviews about the CPU scoring lower than others so I guess HP just targeted power efficiency with this model, it stays stone cold whenever I use it.

I finally caved and bought a MacBook Air for college. It lasted 8 years and was quality the whole time. I've been using an m1 for almost 3 years now. The thing is absolutely awesome. I'm never using a windows laptop. Spending a couple hundred more is absolutely worth it for certain things. NOBODY who has a m1 air thinks it's bad, or a waste of money. Sadly you haven't. All you need is the software dealing with them (which can run into 100s of gbs like Logic) and your current project. You're not going to get even close to pushing 256gb without data hoarding or stacking it up with software for literally any field and user-case. And if you're not an average user, you can just upgrade it or carry a external ssd with you.

If you want to have a legit point, just complain about prices of upgrades lol.

The frick are you even talking about. I have like, single VSTs that practically fill up that drive you fricking moron.

Imagine installing a DAW and then carrying all your VSTs around on a fricking portable drive lmfao. Also my projects folder on my current machine would also head towards filling up 256Gb by itself. It is a legit point you fricking moron.

See, that's a legit complaint. Acting like 256gb won't do for most users isn't.

256 literally won't do. I have multiple projects that go beyond that, like working on a game, working on music, etc. Even my shitty real job laptop has more than 256gb worth of work files on it and all I have are word docs, excel sheets, and shit like that.

It's part of a series about Morgoth, part 1 is Ainulindalë https://vocaroo.com/1ayh2mFgXJiQ and actually uses more of the VSTs but it's less exciting to show off.

That part is called Udûn Rises,The Fall Of Illuin & Ormal and has less and more real instruments, and then I haven't finished part 3 yet but it's basically just going to be about his fall and maybe Dagor Dagorath or maybe there will be 4 parts idk https://vocaroo.com/1lzkw9lsyhGI.

You're not getting the quality library sounds of things like Spitfire, Best Service, Kontakt etc. etc. from stock plugins. Although you can have lower ones that still give quality from korg or roland. I think addictive drums stock is even like 10s of GB if you don't have access to a real kit.

Ah, now the choruses make more sense and the more modern sound for Udun is a clever choice, though IMO you're kinda setting yourself up by picking such legendary events - shit needs to be transcendent-tier to match it while it sounds more like an OST for game/movie.

Eh, I know I can't match what the events truly are but that's okay. I just enjoy it and that's all that matters in the end.

I go a different route for the stuff I'm making for video games like https://vocaroo.com/1afvmM1j09Dh and https://vocaroo.com/16f7zMpgFzUv

Lawl, the melody in the first one reminds me too much of a sped up version of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXlfjBeEV5Q, which is basically "assfrick song". Second one is super dope, probably my fav so far, has some Alice the Madness vibes but I can imagine it working for tons of different games.

The entire art direction of the game was crazy, shame we're probably never going to see a sequel.

I'm hoping a lot of devs like that if they don't get to make a continuation of their hits as they age end up still doing one last banger game in the same vein as they realize they only have one more left in them.

Oh, and I forgot to reply to the second part. No, my casework daily is creating word docs full of snippings of what I'm entering into legal documents and downloading csvs of data to go with them sometimes.

The second part being the first, as in having tons of different things you're doing? Sure, I mentioned earlier that for such scenarios 256gb is indeed pushing it. But like, we're talking about the base config that's supposed to work for most users, and so far you didn't provide anything supporting the average person would ever need more.

            >You're not going to do any work that handles 200gb files on a passively cooled laptop or any laptop really.
So why the frick are you defending Apple for including a welded 256 GB SSD in their laptops then?

            >wants to use some crazy large VST instead of all the shit coming with Logic
Sounds like a pretty specific user-case.

Isn't that who Apple advertises MacBooks for, musicians and other artists? I wouldn't ever buy one but I'd defend them better if I tried, I don't understand what are you even attempting to achieve here.

i do cad work in a windows vm and the vm's image is currently 107GiB, there's 10 years worth of documents in it

I do 3D art and my files are way bigger than that. CAD files aren't that big tbh.

no, they aren't, there's no big textures, no high bitdepth audio, no 100MP photos, no videos, etc
my point is just that not all work requires a ton of space

Just depends on what you're doing and why, but acting like a computer is good and 256gb is enough because you type out word docs and send emails all day is moronic. Also storage isn't even expensive, the idea that you would need to upgrade or spend $200 for more or whatever the frick apple wants to charge is hilarious when for $200 you should be in the 2-4TB range if you were buying regular parts.

            >for $200 you should be in the 2-4TB range if you were buying regular parts
See, that's a legit complaint. Acting like 256gb won't do for most users isn't.

i'm not saying i would buy a laptop with 256GB of non-upgradable storage. that windows vm is strictly used only for that cad work, it has nothing else on it. but i won't say that 256GB isn't enough for some people, i'm sure there are people who are fine with it, though i admit i don't know why someone with minimal requirements would buy such an expensive laptop in the first place

They're pretty good. I have both a m1 MacBook air 13in and a Thinkpad carbon x1 in the house, the x1 is 0.4lbs less and 1 inch bigger and overall is comparable in performance, but battery life the MacBook has more. Thing is the MacBook was like $1200 new and the x1 was $200.

Also, 256gb is literally one issue move onto the other ones that are even more serious like no numpad or specs that my phone have better of.

my main issue is i cant make a bootable cloned drive and put it into the non existant m2 slot.

I cant use carbon copy cloner, to back up to an external m2

I can't replace the internal m2 at will.

hence 2012 - 2015 mac book pros or me.

To get around the battery issues I install a new battery and use an anker external, Still not as good but it will get me 5 hours maybe 6.

The other thing is I can get maybe 7 2015 lapotps for the same price of a M3 - M2 - and I can put a M2 drive of any size in it

This leaves me with massive redunancy, rather than a ticking time bomb.

Perhaps I can run someting of the thuderbolt ports but just as fast I am not sure.

As things are I see the mac silicons as very nice ticking time bombs

There is the legacy cost of years of experience I have on the intel macs that more or less let me fix any issue or identify what the issue is.

Further I have the option of metal, linux, windows or OSX

And alot of programs I use, well I dont know if they are even avialable on the apple silicon.

the 2012 15 inch with the more or less removable drive and ethernet port inibuilt is probally the best.

2 x HD bays if you want
    ethernet
    RAM replacemable !!!!
    Battery replaceable easily

If 256gb and 8gb of ram is enough for someone, then a cheap laptop or Chromebook that cost 1/6 of the gaybook, should be enough too.

Shhh, they can't figure that part out. You can get a refurbed Dell with an i7 16GB of ram and 256drive (both upgradeable) for $300.

The problem I have with modern Macs is that they can't run Windows.

I have a 2013 iMac on Windows since macOS is no longer supported on it. I actually really like that device, it works very well. It's way too expensive though, I only got it because it was heavily discounted).

Similar PCs are often much weaker for some reason. By that, I mean "all-in-one" computers. I know that DELL makes ultra-small computers that you just insert in the back of a monitor; those are very nice as well but they're just as expensive.
I recently bought a "gaming laptop" despite me hating those. The thing is that an equivalent desktop PC was TWICE as expensive.
    I don't get the market.

The keyboards are absolutely shit on Macbooks.
You know you're talking to an absolutely delusional fanboy if they praise it.

Also, I don't know if it's the software but I find the trackpads super weird.
They don't detect clicks as easily as other trackpads and it always takes a while and tons of misclicks to get used to them.

I got an M1 model for free from my job in January. I was particularly surprised at how good the speakers are. Screen is decent, trackpad felt nice (it has that pressure sensitivity thing which I appreciate), keyboard is bad. 2 usbc only ports are atrocious. Had to get one of those usbc multidingdongle crap. Weight, thickness, and hinge rigidity are within acceptable levels. Functionality wise for me it's just a vscode machine. Performance... nothing really special for its price range, I guess. The battery life is not bad, sure hope it lasts couple of years without noticeable drop. Can't say I'm used to the OS yet, but so far nothing irks me. Though, app store apps can go to hell.
