How much do security updates really matter for a phone?

How much do security updates really matter for a phone? I'd love to buy picrel but it seems to basically never be updated.

They sell well enough for a company to fill the niche and there is very little competition

it's not the security updates you really have to worry about (they matter but only when a log4j happens), it's the apps that say "we can't support you because your OS doesn't have redundant API #45610. please install the latest version of android"

I imagine part of why anyone wants this phone is so they can stop spending so much time on all these apps

Using a OnePlus 3T here. Last update was in 2018 or 2019, no issues.

Some morons here are able to live with Android 11 in 2024. Others will die if their fave brand didn't push out a monthly security update.

      thanks guys

Squareshit didn't updoot their game to work on newer Android. Many such cases.
I am on 13 and regret losing access to data and obb folders.

Google play security updates matter too. That gets supported far longer than the manufacturers’ device security updates. It’s most likely that any android phone running android 10 or above is running on a recent version of a google play update, which allows google to address critical flaws. Standard security updates are mostly marketing.

In my opinion completely unrelevant other than for ultra normies.
