Usually it's router or client devices that are the bottleneck.

Who sells a multi-gig capable ONT that can't actually deliver multi-gig performance?

8 USD for 20 mbps broadband

      Anonymous

      Wrong.

That’s not broadband. New FCC minimum for broadband is 100mpbs download and 20mpbs, ISPs got salty over it. ISPs should not be advertising slower speeds as broadband.

akshuly I calculated it. my CR1000A has a max power draw of 60W. if we assume 1 mo = 30 days:
      30 x 60 x 24/ 1000 = 43.2kWh
I pay around 20 cents a kWh so:
0.2 * 43.2 = $8.64 a month. obv in reality it's lower than that because it'll never draw full power.

Why is internet so cheap in Europe compared to the US?

      Anonymous

      >Amerilard thinks Europe is a single country

Look at the population density of Europe vs the US.

      EU:
      > 274.5 people/sq mi
      US
      > 87 people/sq mi

Even if you only include the contiguous 48 US states, it's 111 people/sq mi, still drastically less densely populated than Europe.

the US didn't get bombed to shit in the 1940s and therefore has much older infrastructure

Europe is a smaller, more densely populated continent.

Also because the US got in so early on broadband, most of the existing infra is copper and not fiber. Copper is only cheaper up front - it costs a lot more to maintain over multiple decades.

Also EU, despite all it's flaws, gives a shit about consumer rights. In the US the ISP's can offer a shit service for an asinine price without repercussions, because what you're gonna do, find a different ISP?

I'm sorry my friend, I misread your post. We can own our routers too, it's just typically that normies buy into their ISP's scam and "rent" a router from them.

It's okay, I was just ripping on OP for saying "wifi bill" because jfc how can you say that with a straight face. Well, maybe homosexual "cloud" networking gear companies like Ubiquiti might come up with it. I have the trash jank Latvian piece of shit known as Mikrotik so I don't have to worry about that.
