Having genre elements does not equal being genre. Kazuo Ishiguro can easily be considered genre by how he uses it, yet he won a Nobel Prize, and you don't see genre trash getting a Nobel Prize, do you?

          Anonymous

It's entirely possible to win the Nobel Prize and write genre fiction. Both Blood Meridian and Dune are genre fiction so it doesn't make sense to describe BM as "existentialist" and Dune simply as genre.

            Anonymous

You can classify any literary work within some form of genre if you look at it broad enough. There's key distinctions between genre and literary fiction, and Blood Meridian and Dune are polar opposites. BM is a literary work, Dune is plot-oriented genre fiction

            Anonymous

Blood Meridian is plot-oriented too. It's all "they go here and do this, then go there and do that". They go from set piece to set piece as in a video game. There's no interiority like in literature.

The scenery virtually remains the same and so do the situations the group finds itself in. It's all about how the characters act and what they say and so on that becomes the focal point. And while it doesn't dive into each of the character's inner empire, it doesn't mean it isn't chacater-oriented.

            Anonymous

You have literally not read BM if you think it's plot oriented.

What other realistic, literary tales have a goddam sea captain with a wooden leg chase around a whale? That's a sailor's tall tale if there ever was one. On the other hand, BM is the most historically accurate novel written. If it still can be within genre, there is no logical reason why Moby dick should be outside its genre.

Blood Meridian is an edgy western written in typical genre fashion (lack of interior world, event-driven, written to impress the senses). Moby-Dick is a literary masterpiece with both interior and exterior world, the characters are people of flesh and blood. not spirits or demons or allegories.

Some do but not on a literary level. Ultimately you can't write a literary novel with no interiority. It's merely a husk, a superficial panorama.

I was referring to the book, which has 3x as much going on at the end compared to the movie and basically half of it happened off screen. if you thought the 3rd act of the movie had a lot going on, holy shit the book.
just got back from seeing the movie, I actually really like how they streamlined the ending and they did a much better job of making you feel the stakes compared to the first one, which had a large stretch in the 2nd act that basically didn't make sense unless you read the book
