I legitimately can't tell if GNOME really lacks thumbnails bc I don't want to use GNOME to see.

        gno- who?
        I use nemo.

Even emacs is better than this.

They've had icon view in the file picker since GNOME 44.

remember to visit your directories in between browser sessions to populate the thumbnails, friends!

      Anonymous

it's GTK4 only and does not generate thumbnails unless you open the file manager and go to the directory you need. Only then the thumbnail cache will be created and you will see the previews. So basically it's as good as worthless.

lmao gnome devs are a bunch of worthless shitstains aren't they?

thumbnails is worthless to begin via both file manager or file picker window once you get over hundreds of memes over more than one year, good luck finding what you're looking for before you forget why you wanted to upload it in the first place

the only solution to this is tmsu but it's anal to tag your shit manually

here's the solution, forget thumbnails. you save a picture and the gtk save as window pops up and the filename is highlighted NOW get this instead of filename what's highlighted is a TAG you can input and filename is auto whatever with option to edit it if you want
simple as and will never happen

Non meme answer: They do by now, but it's a clusterfrick solution. Essentially you have to view the file in native nautilus first to generate a thumbnail, which can then be used by the filepicker. If you just save an image and try to upload it next thing, it won't have a thumbnail in your filepicker.

I tried it and it literally crashes every GTK3 application that has a file picker if the file picker opens.
They need to just remake the file picker from scratch

        Anonymous

What they really need is a way to launch an external filepicker since GTK is clearly not up to the task

It exists. It's called XDG Desktop Portal.

Fun fact: XFCE, like every DE, can have big thumbnails because

It exists. It's called XDG Desktop Portal.
Not every application has implemented it unfortunately
